I was confused when I got approved for this arc, because when I looked it up on GR I saw it came out in 2015. Once I realized they were being re-released I decided to give it a try. It was… fine. I’m not big into the military/deployment vibe but I think my biggest issue was how quickly things kicked off. For example staying at a stranger’s house you literally met that day- but it was a light, spicy read with a bit of plot (that did seem to drag on a bit).

2.5 ⭐

okay, as always, gotta start my review with a little disclaimer – i'm here for a good time, not a long time, and i can only become so impassioned about so many things in life. i definitely see and understand why some people would absolutely hate this book, but i feel like in most small town settings, you're getting some insular, scratch-your-head-wtf-ery, no? that's just to be expected with a small town setting, imo, so i'm fine with it.

i haven't read this previously (the original publishing date is 2015), but enjoyed my first time through! did the fmc depend on the mmc in like five seconds? were there a bunch of side characters with interwoven stories? lots of small town tropes? yes to all of those but i truly don't care, i liked it as a whole! solid 3.5 stars for me.

Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for an advanced review copy. All opinions my own.

I think this will be my favourite book of the year! So much happened in this book that it felt like an entire series. I loved the rawness and even though the ending of it was predictable, there were surprises throughout the middle. The book didn’t feel cheesy like some recent rom-com books. This will be my most recommended rom-com book!

I love the main character and them as a couple so much. However, second Lucy Score book and I'm noticing a trend of rush secondary plot lines and men who don't grovel enough.

I honestly put off reading this book for way too long! Harper and Luke’s story was amazing and I am still thinking about it hours after finishing it. I absolutely adored Harper so much! I think she was what really made this book for me. Her heartbreaking past has made her appreciate everything in her life. She was a goof at times and forges through life, sometimes without thinking, but her compassion and strength was truly inspiring. Luke has also suffered tremendous loss, but his response was the complete opposite of Harper. He was broody and closed himself from ever loving again. There were so many instances that I wanted to smack him over the head and I really don’t think he groveled enough to have Harper forgive him, but this is what made Harper so very special. As much as how angry Luke made me at times, I seriously melted with his reaction to the pups in this book!

I felt so many emotions reading this book; I swooned, I laughed, I sobbed, I was so angry, but then felt such contentment. What a fantastic book!!

This had some moments that were good. I liked the idea and most of the supporting cast. But I can't rate anything that ends happily without actually resolving the conflict between the main characters above a 2. Can't do it. There was no believable character growth. And withholding information, then snooping around and opening each other's mail does not make for a healthy relationship, so I just can't with this overall even though I enjoyed it while I was in the middle of it.

Lucy Score is so good at writing small town romances. This had one of my least favourite tropes - forced / shared bed and fake relationship, but I instantly adored Harper who literally arrived in the small town of Benevolence swinging! She is really scatty but has a big heart and needs a fresh start. Luke is a local boy and business owner who serves in the National Guard and is due to deploy in one month. They decide to enter a pretend relationship for that month to keep Luke’s family off his back and give Harper and month to decide what she wants. But sparks fly from the beginning and sometimes we have to accept what is in front of us.
Luke was

I haven’t read a Lucy Score book that I haven’t enjoyed. I do feel like there were some slow points but by the end of the book I was completely invested in Harper and Luke’s love story. I had all the emotions going - anger, tears, happiness. I love when an author can bring all those out in a book. I am looking forward to reading about Aldo and Gloria in the next book
