Harper is passing through town when she becomes involved in a domestic abuse situation. She rushes to help, and in the process she meets Luke. Luke is a soldier with a traumatic past who is unwilling to fall in love again. He and Harper agree to fake date to keep his meddling family satisfied and to help Harper get on her feet with a job and place to stay. However, they soon realize their feelings aren’t fake anymore.
I am a big fan of Lucy Score, but I didn’t enjoy this one as much as many of her other books. I think it came down to a few factors- one being that I am not a big fan of military romances. It’s hard when the two characters spend so much of the book apart. There were also many heavy topics within this book, and though they were handled well, I’d recommend readers look into content warnings before diving in. One trope in particular regarding Luke’s past was hard to read about. I did enjoy the first part of the book, and the spice was excellent. Not every book is for every reader, and I think this one just was too heavy and contained difficult topics that I don’t enjoy reading about. However, if these things don’t bother you, I think you’ll enjoy this book. Lucy Score is a great storyteller and this one is no exception.
Thank you to Lucy Score, Bloom Books, and Netgalley for the arc in exchange for my honest review.

CASUALLY UP TILL 3AM READING AGAIN BECAUSE I COULDNT STOP
I feel the story were somewhat draggy until more than halfway of the book.
But I kept going because I love Luke and Harper together. I also love the whole city.
But almost at the end I hated Luke to the bone!!! But it was all paid at the end, I don’t hate him anymore

This book hooked me from the beginning! Forced Proximity and fake dating tropes? Yes please!
Loved both of the characters and the spice and wit in this one. It was my first Lucy Score book and it definitely had me wanting to read more by her!

INITIAL THOUGHTS
when I tell you, I have never read a book so fast in my life!!! to be fair, I had just had surgery and was stuck on the couch, so what else did I have to do? Also, it was the biggest plot twist I have ever experienced; it was so good...that's all I'm going to say, as I don't particularly appreciate giving spoilers. Anyways, lets just say I'm glad i was alone when finishing the last 1/4 of this book because i don't think i have ever cried so much in my life to a book...it was a beautiful experience. Again, as I have said in other reviews...I don't like smut, so that was the one downside to this book...some may say it didn't even have that much, but it was more than enough for me haha.
FAVORITE QUOTES:
*“You can’t put your worth in someone else’s hands like that. Whether those hands are stroking you or hurting you. It doesn’t matter. Your value comes from inside. Whether you mean something to him or not has nothing to do with how inherently valuable you are.”*
*“I guess some of us just don’t recognize how valuable our time is here. How we shouldn’t spend our time mourning our loss, but thanking our lucky stars we had someone wonderful in our lives for no matter how long.”*
*“I still get access to the same sunrises everyone else does, the same 24 hours in a day. And if I don’t take advantage of those things, it’s my own fault.”*
SUMMARY:
The story follows a charming but troubled small-town man and a driven woman who enter into a fake relationship. The arrangement is intended to fulfill a personal need for both characters, but as they navigate their pretend romance, genuine feelings begin to develop. This is going well until they discover they both have secrets from their past that have followed them to their current lives.

Dnf like I just can’t be bothered does this girl get paid by the word or something because I feel like this could’ve been like a short cute novella
*small town romance
*fake dating
*one bed
*close proximity (esp. in the kitchen *ahem*)
*hero in the National Guard
Lucy Score’s classic “Pretend You’re Mine” is a real page-turner. Set in the beloved small town of Benevolence, the story kicks off with Harper’s arrival as the town’s newest resident, catching the eye of Luke. Their encounter begins when Luke steps in to assist Harper during a tense situation, where she stands up to a verbally and physically abusive man. Luke is immediately struck by Harper’s beauty, strength, and complexity.
Luke offers his place as a temporary home and helps her retrieve her belongings from her ex-boyfriend’s place. In return, Luke proposes a unique arrangement: he asks Harper to pose as his fake girlfriend to deter his family’s meddling with other potential matches, until he leaves for a six-month deployment.
As comical as it may seem to label their relationship as “temporary” and “fake,” the evolution of their friendship and genuine affection proves anything but. As Luke and Harper gradually find a home in the form of each other, they also face the challenges of past tragedy and loss but also the promises of hope and love.
I loved Luke and Harper. They are a sweet ’n’ spicy couple I couldn’t get enough of them. There certainly was no holding back with their steamy scenes. The town of Benevolence is a characteristic Lucy Score book. It’s the perfect beginning
of a series I’m looking forward to continue. It is now one of my favourite Lucy books.
