I liked this book, it has a decent storyline and I liked the difference between this and the usual “slow burn, get together, break up dramatically, reconcile” storyline I see in romance series. I found it insteresting to see how Harper navigated benevolence whilst Luke was on deployment.
I did however HATE the way Luke treated Harper for like 90% of the book. I understand he is damaged and feels he ischeating on his dead wife by loving another woman (does this man think widows are celibate?) but to ask her to stay and wait for him because he “wants to come home to her” and then blow up at her when he realised she didn’t just hide away in his empty, almost furnitureless house for 6 months and made an EFFORT to bond with people. Man went batshit over some cushions and throw blankets.
Just by the way to immediately kick her out (at night) and then drive around town looking for her car and calling her nonstop because she won’t tell him where she is. Understandable since he literally told her he doesn’t and could never love her and acted disgusted that she was trying to wedge herself into his life to replace his dead wife (who she lays flowers for everyday and who’s own mother loves her). And literally told her to move out ASAP because he didn’t want her around
Love Harper though. I wouldn’t have stayed as long as she did, but we learn quickly that she is longing for a family which he found in Benevolence (much to Luke’s chagrin apparently). I liked her bond with Aldo and look forward to reading from his perspective in the next book.
I wouldn’t say I loved the ending, though I get this a lot with these kind of books. Having 98% of the book be this back and forth situationship with a load of fragile masculinity and silent treatment just for the final 20 pages to say “then they got engaged, and married and now they’re pregnant and they live in their dream home and everyone lived happily ever after” when we only got to see, what? 1 month of them actually together (I.e not faking it, being 7000 miles apart, fighting) is crazy. The way Luke is giving mixed signals right up until the last few pages of the book was a bit weird to me.

DNF @ 52%. I could not get through another 200 ish pages of this ridiculous couple.

Okay, not going to lie, I think this has been my least favourite Lucy Score book I have read at the moment. There were quite a few things that just didn’t sit right with me. The main one being I just felt like the pacing for this book was all over the place and it felt as though things moved way too quickly and it was just too much. I also didn’t find the characters as likeable as I have in some other Lucy Score books. I said to my friend if I am acting this way in my 30’s feel free to slap me across the face. I found that Luke and Harper were so immature for the their ages and I got sick of their hate sex very quickly. That isn’t a trope that is for me and it drives me nuts.
The story itself felt very rushed and just like the author wanted to get something out on the shelves for a quick cash grab. I did think it was a cute story but the execution of it was just very poor and didn’t hit as hard as her other books.
There were also way too many sex scenes in this book and I was quickly rolling my eyes at these two. They felt more like two hormonal teenagers than adults. It was crazy.
The final conflict was also very disappointing. I was so bored and felt like I got nothing out of it.
I will be continuing this series as I have borrowed them from my library but I'm hoping more care is put into the other two books.

Read it for a book club and I was only able to get through it by listening to it at 2x speed. It’s just an x-rated hallmark movie where nothing really happens and it was way too long.
Luke and Harper’s story was almost perfect.
This small town romance has a lot going for it.
Harper is wild, brave and fun. She just needs a bit of luck on her side, to slow down, and finds her place in life.
Luke is stoic, broken and going through the motions. He needs something or someone to knock him on his ass.
They are perfect for each other. And the spice was spicy!
My only issue is the jump at the end. I could have used a bit more time with them before that.
