DNF at 43%. There's nothing wrong with it, I'm just a bit bored and there are so many other books I want to read.

Delightful and fast-paced historical fiction. Rutledge does a masterful job reimagining this historical journey. The 1930's US highways came to life! A joy to read!

3.5 stars - Sweet coming of age adventure story through the memory of a 105 year old man at the end of his life. I wanted to feel more from this story… wanted something more tangible and stirring. I loved the connection Woody had to the animals. I'm being picky, but the style of writing grated on me at points. It is written in letter format in Woody's voice, which is fine, but the overuse of some words like abide got on my nerves.

Engaging and heartwarming, with a couple of gut-wrenching twists in the protagonist's story. This is a book for those who possess wonder for nature and an abiding love for all animals.

I laughed, I yelled, I cussed, and I cried. It’s rare to find a book that can do all that. I couldn’t put it down. I loved this story and how it was told. I was completely immersed in that timeframe and those characters. Better than stars, it gets ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Really assumed I’d hate this based on the poor reviews from my fellow book club members as they finished up, but didn’t end up hating it. If I had to be particular (which I do, obviously) I’d give it a 2.75.

The story felt like it had so much potential to be whimsical and spectacular story of adventure and hope juxtaposing a grim historic moment in time (dust bowl, WWII, etc.) but just really fell flat in the areas I thought it could’ve done more. Didn’t love the ending; really just felt like the author got bored of writing the story. All around, it was fine.

This book was very repetitive. Basically something bad happens, the character has trouble sleeping, nightmares, character wakes up, they drive 100 miles, repeat.
