I enjoyed the first half, I love a good spooky historical work. But the twists were all a little too transparent to me, so when they were finally 'revealed' it just felt like a "yes, and...?" I got a little bored in the second half, and the ending felt... I wanted more of a bang. 

Also, after reading the book, I went to read about the Donner Party. I had assumed that the Donner Party had been a big mystery, like no one knew what happened to them (in a similar vein to Lost Colony of Roanoke). Nope, we know what happened to them. And it was really tragic, and actually not a mystery. If I had known the history before, I probably wouldn't have enjoyed the book, simply because it would have seemed... a little tasteless? And also, not a thing to make some supernatural mystery out of? Like we know... we literally know what happened. I think a fictionalized wagon party, that took inspiration from the Donner Party's story, would have been a better fit.
