I’ve never read a super hero book before but because I would read literally anything Julie Murphy writes I read and LOVED this!

I think I expected more of a contemporary plot with a slight speculative feel. I.e Faith trying to live a normal life after she’s randomly granted powers. So she’s balancing school, and her secret identity as she navigates her powers.

Instead there were so many different plot points that I felt like shouldn’t have been in the novel. The Grove cast/ TV Show, the study drugs, the love triangle with Johnny and Dakota, her grandmas dementia, the secret organization that gave her powers, Ches going to prison, etc etc.

It felt like a lot for one book. I think I would have preferred something more relaxed or something that was FULL ON speculative that focused more on crime fighting, the study drugs, and people with powers.

3.5 for this YA superhero book with the first fat, queer female superhero I’ve ever read about. I liked a lot of this book, mostly because of Julie’s writing, but this was definitely an original and first book like this for me so I had to get used to a lot of things like the world of comics and an origin story. Joining the Maverick committee for TLA this year has definitely broadened by comic reading, but I still struggled a bit to jump on board with her origin story. Thank you Edelweiss for an ARC of this book. I will purchase for my library and all opinions are my own.

I really wanted to love this. A fat main character who's also a superhero? And queer??? Count me in!

Unfortunately, I just couldn't get in to it. I'm not a fan of pop culture references even in present day stories and there were just so many of them. I was also a lot more interested in the superhero aspect than the romance aspect and so much of the book was focused on the love triangle between Faith, Dakota, and Johnny. Even while acknowledging that love triangles aren't fun! I was fully skimming by the last 40% or so, but I don't even know if we got a resolution with Johnny or if Faith just started spending more time with Dakota and didn't mention Johnny again post-corn maze.

I think this book may be a hit for someone else, just not for me :/

A YA novel based on a comic? Interesting, but not as fun and...reasonable?...as I would like. There was a LOT going on and it didn't all jibe. At its best, it was fandom/body positive/queer teen joy, and at its worst it was disheveled plot-plot action-action comic strip mayhem.

In sum - great idea, great author, story should probably stay in the comic realm.
