I just finished the Jane short story collection ‘Cat o Nine Tails’ as I was able to find it for free on Audible - so that meant I only read the shorts that did not appear in that collection.

‘Bound No More’ was my favourite. ‘Cat Fight’ was a fun one as it took me back to the same locale as ‘Beneath a Bloody Moon’ and ‘Dark Water’ which were two of my favourites from ‘Cat O Nine Tails’.
I also really enjoyed ‘The Devil’s Left Boot’ and expanding my knowledge of the Everhart sisters.
Of the 6 shorts I read I really liked them all so don’t have a least favourite, although I suppose ‘Snafu’ could take the slot purely because of the length as I would have liked to know more about Jane training as a PI - but they can’t all be longer shorts or they wouldn’t be shorts.

4 stars - so fun learning more about Jane’s world with this huge short story collection.

4 1/2; I've finish all but 2 and going to call it for now finished. There were only a few in the 2 to 3 star range and most were 4 to 5 stars. I think I like the novellas better than the novels, at least the newer novellas. The first couple were so so but so short that I couldn't call them more than a short story, so can't have the same weight.
We Sa and the Lumber King 3 star
Very short showing Jane waking up to Beast. Beast POV
The Early Years 3 1/2 Jane POV
Pretty short also
Leaving the Foster home system. Going to where her memories take her and learning about herself.
Interesting.
Snafu 4 stars Jane POV. OK read this earlier, added it from review.
Quick first story on Jane and her first getting her first job in a bad part of town. This got me right back to remembering who Jane is and her dual personality. I really enjoyed it and will read a few more of the novellas before going to the next book in the series. I put it down a couple years back.
Cat Tats I'll come back to this as I hate Rick for Jane. I like Rick, I just hate his relationship with Jane. It never made sense to me after his change and before it, he was a cocky bastard. He is pretty good as Nell's boss in the Soulwood series.
Kits 4 1/2 stars
This is where Molly really becomes friends with Jane. Beast is very protective of Molly's kits.
Haints 5 stars
This was by far the best Jane story I've read and it is in Molly's POV. Still the story of the haunting, of trying to get paid, of Jane and Evan getting along to make it work, of how no one but Molly and her sisters like Evangeline, of bringing in the cop to help make it work, of her discovering more about Jane. I just cannot see how see ever took Evangeline's side later, argh! And Jane blaming herself. Still in this one they all are great.
Signatures of the Dead 4 star
Told in Molly's POV. Molly is hired by her police friend, Braxton, to "read" a crime scene to see if she could see what happened and where the criminals left to. She ends up working on it with Jane to find a vampire layer. Now it is time to take them down.
First Sighting 4 stars
Told in Bruiser's POV, it is a short on when Jane Yellowrock first confronts Leo and Bruiser. At first I thought it was a training exercise but it there first meeting.
Blood, Fangs and Going Furry 4 stars
Rick's POV of what happened when he couldn't shift, where he was taken, and how Jane becomes alpha of Kenabi. This was interesting since I'm reading the Soulwood stories. Still don't like Rick for Jane, never really did. It was a little deja vu so don't know if I have ever read it or just imagined what got Rick from point A the crappy first non-turn to being in the forest with Kenabi pretty much drunk.
Dance Master 5 stars
Bruiser's POV on Jane and how he feels about her. She comes to a scene to scope out and see what more information she can add. Afterwards George (Bruiser) puts on some music and we get to see their chemistry which is too far and between in this series IMHO. I always liked George but he is beholden to Leo I really hate him for Jane.
Cajun with Fangs 5 stars
This was a great short Yellowrock, solving a vampire/witch problem. The only real issue I had was that is was too coincidental that her bike breaks down right at that town, at that time, when Lucky was having this problem. Also Lucky is so not going to get the good sport award.
Golden Delicious 5 stars
I really liked this Rick story about his start in PsyLed (PISLED?). If you read Soulwood you might have forgiven Rick's idiocy in the Yellowrock series and since her isn't a romantic possibility with Nell, he is so much better for me. He is just a good investigator.
The Devil's Left Boot 5 stars
From [b:Kicking It|15980677|Kicking It (Alex Craft, #2.5; Chicagoland Vampires, #8.25)|Faith Hunter|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1364324827s/15980677.jpg|21732927] review, didn't reread.
Faith Hunter from Yellowrock world- Devil's Left Boot 5
Twin sister witches are hired by their old high school bully to find her mother. This was a really good one though short (these are short). We get a little look into the twins and good magic vs blood magic. Then Jane has to show up when a vamp is involved. And there is a lot of boot craving. I liked that they took on the job even though they pretty much hated their H.S. rival. I'm about 3 books behind the 6.1 where this takes place so probably hit a big time spoiler.
Beneath a Bloody Moon 2 stars
She get hurt severely too many times in this one and it also irritated me. Along with the Rick being the love interest, just made it hard to like. Then the overall story was just not that great. Only the ending and the lone wolf was interesting. It was OK and just.
Black Water 4 stars
This novella picks up where [b:Beneath a Bloody Moon|20744988|Beneath a Bloody Moon (Jane Yellowrock #6.2)|Faith Hunter|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1391738605s/20744988.jpg|40075975] leaves off, with Jane going to see if perhaps the lone wolf is the cause of the deaths in the area where they took down the pack. She soon finds out it is the brother of the crazy female of the pack that they killed. This one was so much better for me. Jane isn't on the edge of death and Rick is only on the phone. The story line is much more cohesive and she is more in control. Much better read for me and I enjoyed it through.
Off the Grid 5 stars This is where we meet Nell
I loved this and meeting Nell. Jane really affected her life and where she was heading. It probably ended up for the better but at the time it was an invasion of privacy. Really good short saving several people not just the vampire.
Not All is As It Seems
Cat Fight
Bound No More 4 1/2
Angie is coming into her own and it is way too soon as she is still a temper tantrum child and the dangers of the power are great. Jane's place is being attacked by a light dragon and we are trying to figure out why. Angie "sees" this and warns Jane, so she is wrapped up in this also. This is partly about growing up and partly about what the future could hold. Really nice to see Eli good with kids and Jane learning more as she goes.

Before we get into this:

1. If you're new to JANE YELLOWROCK, proceed with CAUTION. I will not intentionally spoil anything, but this collection includes NINETEEN stories about events that take place both before and throughout the main series.

If you're curious, check out my review of Skinwalker. It's safer. And enthusiastic (b/c LOVE Jane).

2. I've been slack on keeping up with Jane lately, b/c stubbornly waiting for the European vamps to get here, so I'm reading a lot of the recently written stories for the first time--the older stories from HAVE STAKES, WILL TRAVEL and CAT TALES I've read several times now, and I read BLACK WATER when it first came out.

So my opinions on Big Deal situations in the main series are evolving. *coughs* Bruiser *coughs*

3. I hate Rick with the fire of ONE THOUSAND suns. My reviews of his POVs reflect that. FYI.

We Sa and the Lumber King - 4.0 stars

FIRST, I'm not sure there's a more perfect example of Beast vs. Jane than this one:

Night vision came as sunlight left. Earth turned into silvers and greens and grays. Liked this time of day/ night. We sa called it beautiful. I called it safe.

Moving on.

If you're a longtime reader of Jane, you know there are periodic references to the Hunger Times. This is a (very) short story from Beast's POV as she tries to get rid of the humans destroying her natural habitat.

Beast is . . . Beast. *snickers*

We also get a peek at baby Jane, who hasn't yet found her way back to human form after melding with Beast.

The Early Years - 4.0 stars

An 18-year-old Jane follows an instinct she doesn't understand and finds her way back home. It gives me FEELS.

Snafu - 3.5 stars

Very short--probably less than 10 pages. Hmm . . . 18 y.o. Jane's first day on the security job training. First 10 min. really . . . But that's all you need to see all the reasons we love Jane. #kickass

Cat Tats - 4.0 stars

Oh, look. Ricky Bo got himself in trouble b/c chasing tail. SHOCKER.

This one's told from Rick's POV, and if you've been curious about how he got his mountain lion/bobcat tattoo:

Rick didn’t know what it meant to have the cats here on his body, beneath his skin, part of him.

IT MEANS NOTHING.

I like this one b/c lots and lots of PAIN for Rick (whom I HATE).

Kits - 5.0 stars

KITS hits me in ALL the FEELS, and it's probably my favorite Jane short to date.

1. Beast and kits always plays havoc with my emotions. She's so fierce and so pure and so . . . single-minded. Nothing is more important than kits. *rubs fist over heart*

2. The birth of Molly and Jane's friendship:

I pulled on my socks and carried my boots into what was left of Molly’s house. We had tea. We shared secrets. Weirdly, Molly held my hand while we talked, as if protecting something fragile or sealing something precious. Even more weirdly, I let her. I think that, for the first time in my life, I had a real friend.

I may have cried. A lot.

Haints - 4.0 stars

HAINTS is one more reason why vampires and witches shouldn't mix. o.O

This one is told from Molly's POV, which is awesome b/c we get to see Jane through her eyes (ALSO b/c Molly). Evan is on hand as well, and as he's not hating on Jane, that's fun, too.

Two word summary: WEIRD magic.

ALSO, there are several Easter eggs hidden for true Jane aficionados.

Signatures of Death - 4.0 stars

You know that job Jane had prior to hitting New Orleans? The one where she nearly got her throat ripped out? The one where some kid got her on video with her eyes glowing?

This is that story.

It's not pretty. But dealing with rogue vampires rarely is.

Good thing we have Jane.

First Sight - 4.0 stars

Jane's first meeting with Leo and Bruiser told from Bruiser's POV.

Kind of sexy . . . But I'm still not #teambruiser

#teamjane

Blood, Fangs, and Going Furry - 3.5 stars

Have I mentioned that I HATE Rick? B/c I do.

This one is from Rick's POV, and it details his first full moon as a were . . . A were unable to shift b/c witchy tattoos. It appears to be rather painful.

THIS PLEASES ME.

And I would've given it full marks if it hadn't been for his, "Woe is me, I really effed things up with Jane," and, "I really need to talk to her, I need to explain," crap and trash.

SpoilerStay the fuck away from Jane, you ASS.
<------not a spoiler, just me cursing at Rick (spoiler tagged out of respect for Jane who hates potty mouths).

Fool me once . . .

Dance Master - 4.5 stars

Okay . . . That was HOT.

I'm still #teamjane but now I'm closer to #teambruiser than I've been since that limo ride in one of the first books . . . youknowwhatimtalkingabout *fans self*

Golden Delicious - 3.0 stars

Short story from Rick's perspective. Takes place during his training with PsyLED.

I hate Rick.

At least there's Pea. *glares daggers at Rick*

Cajun with Fangs - 3.5 stars

This one is a Hatfields and McCoys scenario played out by vampires and witches in the bayou. Jane gets tricked into helping moderate a dispute, and by "tricked" I mean clocked with a heavy object.

Pretty standard as far as these types of things go, BUT most of the involved parties have fantastic Cajun accents, and I do love me a good Cajun accent.

The Devil's Left Boot - 4.0 stars

This one was told from the POVs of two of the Everhart sisters, Elizabeth and Boadacia. It takes place after the big Evangelina showdown, and tensions are still running high.

When their high school nemesis shows up of the family restaurant, as much as Liz and Cia would like to send her packing, they end up agreeing to help her find her mother who's disappeared.

For a fee.

They find themselves over their heads and call in Jane who just happens to be in town, but in the process of working their magic, absorb another witch's blood magic . . . The same kind of magic that made Evangelina go CRAY . . . The effing end. *shakes fist*

Beneath a Bloody Moon - 3.0 stars

If Faith Hunter has a flaw, it's overusing concepts and/or revamping (HA!) ideas that have previously been treated as unique.

We know from MERCY BLADE that werewolves are cursed with both madness and an inability to create female werewolves. Which was why Magnolia Sweets was such a Big Deal.

Yet in this story, what are we dealing with?

Another female werewolf. *sighs* And the way the story plays out, we never get an explanation for HOW she exists or what the deal is with the inexplicably HUGE dire werewolf.

ALSO, there's Rick. Being Rick. Ugh.

Black Water - 4.0 stars

Feeling responsible for the kidnapping of two women (b/c the kidnapper busted out jail seeking revenge after someone on Jane's team killed his werewolf sister), Jane enlists the help of Sarge (from BENEATH A BLOODY MOON) and his monster dog in a rescue mission.

I want to know 3 things:

1. How is it exactly that Sarge is sane?
2. How are Sarge and Christabel able to communicate with monster dog?
3. WHAT THE BLOODY HECK IS CHRISTABEL??!

Off the Grid - 4.5 stars

At Dragon Con 2014 (and 2015), I went to a bunch of Faith's panels. In one of them she talked about a new series she's working on. I was excited about this for numerous reasons, the two biggest being:

1. New Faith Hunter series--YAY.
2. It takes place in Oak Ridge.

For those of you that don't know, Oak Ridge is in Tennessee, near Knoxville. It's also where the first atomic bomb was made.

One of my dads has lived in Andersonville, part of the same county that Oak Ridge is in, for about 20 years, and has been working at Y-12 for the last 6 or 8 years.

I am fascinated by this place.

I have been fascinated by this place since I was a teenager.

In this story we meet Nell Nicholson Ingram, who is the heroine in Hunter's new series. I'm not sure what she is exactly, but my money's on her having some kind of Fae in her ancestry, and the only thing I love more than Native American folklore is the Fae.

Fae in Oak Ridge.
description
GIVE IT TO ME NOW.

Not All Is as It Seems - 4.0 stars

This was a Molly POV, so I was already inclined to like it, but, man alive . . . Every time I think vampires are wholly unredeemable, every time I'm ready to write them off completely (b/c reprehensible, elitist, devious, hedonistic, disgusting creatures), something has to go an throw me for a loop.

This time it was Lincoln Shaddock.

I really like the Asheville vampires. Against my better judgement, but all the same . . . I like them.

Cat Fight - 4.5 stars

CAT FIGHT sends Jane back to bayou, b/c the vamp/witchy version of the Hatfields and the McCoys aren't playing nice any longer.

Our star-crossed lovers are behaving like children, Shauna stealing a valuable magical artifact from her father-in-law and running home to her Mama and Daddy . . . Then the Vatican gets involved, and basically it's a big 'ol mess.

Good thing Jane's excellent at making people shut up and listen.

We get some more insight into Edward (which makes me not-worried for Leo, the control-freaky jackhole), and Gee also makes an appearance (I LOVE Gee), so, yeah, it was great.

Bound No More - 4.0 stars

Boy howdy, Angie Baby is gonna be hell on wheels when she hits adolescence . . . o.O

In this final tale, Molly is in town with Angie for the Witch/Vampire parley, and that light dragon thingy is out for Molly's blood. If you want to know why, READ THE BOOK.

Point of interest: the thing that put me off so badly in DARK HEIR--Jane continuing to dothething when it had been established that if she didn't stop, it would KILL HER--was explained better, so I'm okay with it now . . . Either that or I've had enough distance to get over it. *shrugs*

SO. Should you read BLOOD IN HER VEINS for yourself? Only if you love Jane. And if you don't love Jane, GET OUT! what are you doing here? Highly recommended.

Some great short stories. It only misses that extra star because it was bitty. As they were all Jane, I felt like I wanted something to sink my teeth into. As a book to go to between Yellowrock readings would be perfect. But I read it all as one.

Blood In Her Veins is another compilation of great Jane Yellowrock short stories and novellas. Cat o' Nine Tales is a previously released audiobook and most of Blood In Her Veins (about 50% of it) is everything that is in Cat o' Nine Tales, just in print now. I reread some of my favorites from the first book, but mostly skipped to the new stories. I'm only going to talk about those in detail, but know that all of the stories are great and I highly recommend all of them!

The Devil's Left Boot
This one follows Liz and Cia- Everheart sisters and twins. They help a former classmate track down her missing mother, and along the way they run into some old vampire skeletons in the closet.

Off the Grid
Nell is our MC here. She's a new character for us, but we will get to know her very well this fall when Blood of the Earth comes out; Faith's new series featuring Nell! Her story is really interesting and I am so excited for it. Nell is a kinda-witch who escaped life on a cult compound. Jane Yellowrock meets Nell after a Master Vamp in Tennessee requests help locating a lost member.

Not All as It Seems
Molly solves the mystery of why a teapot belonging to a vampire keeps showing up in Angie's toy box. I love Molly stories and seeing her protect her kits.

Cat Fight
Jane is sent to broker peace between the vamps and witches of Oiseau (again). This novella is pretty long and had a lot of things going on. It didn't have as quick a pace as I like to see in a short story, but it was still an enjoyable read. It actually read like a scene that was cut from a book; it was a bit more spread out, like we would have time to be there a while. It did have delightful mentions of bayou food.

Bound No More
This is high up on my list of favorite JY shorts. Molly and Angie Baby are in New Orleans to meet with the NO coven prior to the big council meeting coming up. They're attacked by a young arcenciel trying to alter the timeline of someone with them. This one has a big cast and I love them all.

If you haven't read any of the Jane Yellowrock books, I severely recommend them, especially in audio book format. These are my favorite urban fantasy books by leaps and bounds. Beast is one of my top five book characters of all time.

Actually, the gathered average for all the short stories was 3.66 Stars.

I cannot say that it was great, but it was good to get to know Jane Yellowrock. Loved the world building that you get by reading all 19 episodes.

I am even more enthused to now read the first book, again. I enjoyed reading it earlier, but just got distracted by other stories to read.

Hopefully I'll pick it up again in May.

I picked up this book mainly to read some of the short stories I haven't read before, and I was not disappointed! Considering I'm listening to most of the short stories as audiobooks and writing reviews on them individually, this review will only contain the reviews for the short stories that don't have their own page here on Goodreads

SNAFU

First read.
It's a short one, but it really shows how Jane becomes the woman we all know and love! Not to mention it gives us a bit more info about her late-teen years, and how she handled Beast when she first appeared. Seems it was confusing, understandibly enough.
There was fun and action and character.

5/5

THE DEVIL'S LEFT BOOT

I'm glad to get a story from Molly's witchy twin sisters, especially at this point in the series. It rounded out a lot of things I didn't realize was unifished. Although I can't remember if the events are ever mentioned, I feel like there's more of a story there.
The main plot in itself didn't do anything for me, but it wasn't bad either.

3/5

NOT ALL IS AS IT SEEM

Aww, my heart!
This story center around Molly and her family, and is very cute in so many ways. I'm so happy I got to read this!

As usual, Hunter's stuff is well written, has good characters, and ticks all my boxes!

Some notes below on four stories, but full review soon on the rest

There are 19 stories - yes, 19 - in this generously stuffed anthology. The majority are through Jane's point of view, a surprising number through Rick's, two through George (Bruiser) Dumas, at least two through Molly, one with Nell as an introduction to that character (didn't interest me much), two of Molly's sisters. We get to revisit the same Cajun town twice and meet another lone werewolf (didn't like him and his 'family' in the second - that dinner conversation got on my major nerves). The most interesting stuff was the in-between stories of stuff that takes place between the novels, and of course the two with Bruiser (be still my heart).

Blood, Fangs and Going Furry - Since it was through Rick's point of view and about the change, I didn't think I'd invest into this story much, but it turned out somewhat fascinating. I felt bad for Rick as I couldn't imagine. Leo was around and actually helpful. Finally I get to read the backstory of Jane making Kem her beta.

Wesa and the Lumber King was short but also fascinating since it shows Beast as alpha before a major hunger times while planning to kill a 'white man' who is ruining the land, with Jane (wesa) in her mind den. Their bond was clearly already strong but different feeling than it would become later when Jane was grown and freer.

The Early Years starts with a sweet goodbye to Bobby at the Children's Home while Jane sets off on her own for the first time, to explore mountains she has only dreamed about. Shows the first change as well into Beast, although not her full realization of it. Somewhat sad story but it was nice to see Jane so young and new to herself.
