this is such a thorough look into a quite niche part of ww2 history that works wonderfully thematically, and i can’t help but love it. werner and marie-laure are both magnificent characters, they contrast each other very nicely. the way it’s set up narratively was a little confusing to me at times, but i think it ultimately succeeds really well in building anticipation for 1944 and their brief meeting in saint-malo. i wanna go there now and see the sea for myself.

they were all just children

I really wish I would have taken notes or a timeline for this book because it wasn’t in chronological order & that really confused me at first, made me think I skipped chapters.

I enjoyed the story but I wasn’t as emotionally invested in the characters’ stories towards the end as much as I was in the beginning. It was still a great book but somehow it feels incomplete.
