I was just nothing

Just not my cup of tea at the moment, and reading through the trigger warnings I don't think I'll be able to finish anyway. Totally my bad for not checking them sooner.

reading the last pages of the book while on a train, looking out at nature while on a man-made object was the perfect choice of scenery.
I read this book via my library but I'm going to get a physical copy asap!

An interesting exploration of the possible future in AI and identity formation. I quite enjoyed the parts about Mary Shelley but thought the contemporary narrative didn’t have a clear goal apart from discussing enigmas of our day and age. I thought it was an original story, but especially the end fell flat for me.

Completely lost interest in this book halfway through and the only reason I got that far is because it was for class. A book that has a lot of big ideas but fails to commentate on them in any compelling way, just completely void of significance. Winterson tries to do something interesting with the form but it just doesn’t work, and her self-indulgent shitty writing doesn’t do it any favors. None of the characters were compelling and they completely lacked interior worlds.

All of that, not even to mention that strange off-putting way the trans protagonist is written which I frankly found was a complete misfire on Winterson’s part as she clearly has no idea what it means to be trans or how to write them appropriately. A portrayal that swayed between liberal cis ignorance and genuinely offensive.

The best part of this book is that the text was an abnormally large font for adult literary fiction which made it much easier to get through. Read this if you’re a masochist I guess.
