There is torture of puppies and pregnant women, along with raping to death. It seemed very “try hard” with the gore, didn’t add to the story at all. Would not recommend.

I took a chance of this book as a reader who is not overly fond of many common horror themes. This book was NOT for me and the ending made me wonder exactly why this book is so well-regarded. This is very difficult to read, the characters are flat, there are characters of color (but guess where most of them are-
They're Meat
), and there were some weak plot points. For example there are very few illnesses that can possibly effect ALL animals except people and there would have been a progression through all the types of animals before cannibalism became the answer. So what chicken and beef go down and then your landlord is nibbling your baby? Is there a huge population of vegans/vegetarians who are doing just fine and not even attempting to protect anybody or themselves?
The main character is just complicit and awful. The ending is a damnation arc honestly.
TLDR: This book isn't for me and this author isn't gonna get another chance from me. If you enjoy dark, realistic (if you lost your glasses and are squinting) horror you will enjoy this, especially if you enjoy human suffering and unnecessary animal cruelty.

Contrary to what the blurb says, this is a book about grief, first and foremost. Grief over the loss of a child, and grief over family being broken.

This is a dark, dark world we find within the pages; a world where animal meat is no longer an option, so people turn to eating humans instead. The madness of this social shift pierces deep, its bloody fingers snagging every conceivable part of society.

I have a lot of thoughts. I think that the raw horror of so many things in this world come and then pass you by just as quickly. It does a lot to inform the reader on the attitudes of people at large, and those even more specifically of the main character, but it means that there are many moments or beats where the book leaves the space immediately, not giving the reader a chance to fully absorb the grim reality even if the charscters on page are (intentionaññy or not) not cognizant of it. This is a story that snatches away what little scraps of hope you have. I enjoyed it a lot, but I wanted a little more space on the page to really let the reader chew things over, to not make it so easy for the resder to breeze over what the cast might be.

Ultimately: a stark, grim, merciless near future, and a story set within the space that I wanted to see a little more bite from.
