This book angers me. It has so much potential but didn’t do anything with it. The characters made weird choices that had me frustratingly wondering why they’d do something like that, only for it to turn up later in the plot. Characters making plot driven decisions, rather than character driven decisions is unimaginative and lazy writing.
What is more, the writer set up a magic system and proceeded to do nothing with it. Opal can shift into a swan but is captured and locked up in a castle tower, with a window… that can open… and fit a grown-ass, full-sized man… BUT SHE DOESN’T FLY OUT!?!? Not to mention the fact she can just open locked doors with her magic and can literally walk out! But she keeps talking about finding a way to escape!!!???!?? What the actual fuck?
