Me and my other half always audiobook the dan brown novels when they come out its pure pulp, their fun and we enjoy to getting carried away in them with no brain space needing to be invited.

This though reached a new low- we had to DNF around the 40th odd chapter. The plot was awful and he took unnecessary time in letting events develop. Most of all, the inclusion of the modern art angle was so cringe we just couldn't. My partner is an artist, we both have art degrees but Browns application of explaining modern art which was just Wikipedia copying was embarrassing. He'd obviously done a tour in Spain....and was quite alright to just let that be it. naming and pointing things he'd seen. Yes, you might argue that as ”arty” people we aren't the audience but the audience whatever knowledge level does not need to be spoken to like children.

It's a big no.

I read the new Robert Langdon books so you don't have to. And trust me, you shouldn't.

Let me start this off by saying, I really enjoyed angels and demons and the DaVinci Code. Dan Brown's writing style is awkward at times and his prose is downright frustrating, but those books had intriguing plots based around a lot of real-life conspiracies. While I don't think they were "good" in a classical literature sense, they were fun and engaging.

This one just sucks. It keeps the same structure as all the previous Robert Langdon books, without any of the fun. Robert Langdon is in a race against the clock to find something and is acccompanied by a beautiful woman while being chased by a mysterious bad guy backed by a mystical religious order. That's every Dan Brown book. In this one though, the bad guy is boring, the sidekick is 1 dimensional, and there aren't any fucking puzzles

That's right, there aren't any puzzles. This book, in a series of books based around a guy who solves puzzles to save the world DOESN'T HAVE ANY PUZZLES. They literally just traipse around spain and occasionally get in tight spots. There's no mystical religious order, there's no hidden symbols in major landmarks, nothing. Just Robert Langdon being claustrophobic in various places around europe.

Also, I'm just really sick of how blatant it has become that Robert Langdon is just a self-insert by Dan Brown. He went to Phillips Exeter Academy (something which comes up every few pages), was a varsity swimmer and is interested in a hot museum curator. Dan Brown went to PEA, was a varsity swimmer and is married to a museum curator. It's just so blatant and makes the descriptions of Robert Langdon as the Hot Smart Strong Main Character(TM) so masturbatory.

Like I said, I loved the DaVinci Code and Angels and Demons, so if you want to read Dan Brown, start there. This one is a hard pass and I would NOT recommend it to anyone.

There were some fun ideas here but the book read like a guided bus tour of Spain without the views. Overly descriptive settings distracted from the plot. It would have been better, perhaps, to include photos of the places he was describing.

Same old Dan Brown. New country, new characters, same plot. If you enjoy his other books, you’ll like this. I just found it to be lacking in action and excitement. Not my favourite.

Compared to the other Robert Langdon books, this one was quite disappointing. There wasn't even a proper antagonist. Frustrated, but I hope the next, if there will be one, will be better.
