dark mysterious tense slow-paced

So once this got going, it got GOING. I was a little bored at first by Margot's lack of personality, and more amused than anything by her persistent angst. However, once she's in the thick of the plot, I really started to love it. I'm a little incredulous about one crucial detail, but it's a zombie story so I'll let it go.

edit: after thinking about this i’m changing my review. i do still wish the storyline was explored more bc i enjoyed the themes of capitalism, greed, etc but it really was a deliciously spooky book. the ending has not left my head YET which is why i’m re-reviewing. i liked it bc it stuck with me, and that it’s several types of horrors in one; horrors of the paranormal and horrors of humanity.

this was okay. it was very spooky but i wish the storyline had more attention. lots of potential, but i felt like a lot was lost bc of the unending descriptions of surviving the night.

I liked how this book tied up most loose ends. It would have been five stars if the first half hadn’t been so slow. I also found the pages and pages of descriptive paragraphs unnecessary (I.e., explaining over and over again that the master bedroom door would stay closed, or explaining repeatedly what the effigy looks like). I thought the story was creative overall and I would recommend it if you can get through the first half of the book.

Margot's family line is questionable at best and their secrets led to a generational curse.

I will say this book, especially the last ten chapters had me hooked, lined, and sunk. I couldn't keep up where the twists and turns we're taking me and I definitely wasn't ready for 85% of the jump scares and gasps and OMG that came from me.

Another underwhelming haunted house story from Darcy Coates.
