Gallows Hill is an atmospheric gothic horror novel featuring a haunted house, a dark family history, and cursed lands. This book was very atmospheric and really pulled me in. It took me longer than usual to finish it because I do a lot of reading before bed and this book legitimately scared me and made me anxious to read it while home alone in the dark. Gallows Hill is well written and and even more well paced. This slow burn gothic horror was attention grabbing while not being too slow for me to lose interest.
I am not a big haunted house fan but Gallows Hill does a really good job of diversifying itself from the genre with interesting characters, a vivid backstory, a couple good twists, and a very satisfying ending. This was my first Darcy Coates book that I have read and I really can’t wait to read more from her.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an arc of this book.
Following the mysterious death of her parents, Margot returns to her childhood home, Gallows Hill, to settle her parents estate and find answers to why her parents left her to be raised by her grandmother at a young age. What she doesn’t know is that once she arrives at Gallows Hill, she belongs to the land and can never leave.
The first half of the book felt like an atmospheric slow burn, however once it picked up it was really hard to put down. Gallows Hill had just the right amount of creepy and haunting and both the characters and the setting were beautifully written. This book is one where you get to watch a character unravel in many ways. She's seeking answers about her family, her home and herself.
However there are shadows and and nooses popping up everywhere. It was great that this kept you and her guessing about ghouls and what was really happening at Gallows Hill.
I’ve read nearly all of Darcy Coates’ books now and loved all of them, she has quickly become one of my favorite authors. This book was no exception.

I'm so sad. I thought Darcy Coates could do no wrong but this is a miss for me. I didn't care enough anything to get spooked and kept waiting and waiting and when something happened it was like, oh i guess technically that's scary.
the ending demanded too much plausibility

Absolutely loved how creepy this story was! Definitely will give you chills if you're reading alone in the dark. Got my heart rate going and was hard to put down. Darcy Coates weaves a great backstory with this one as well as a twisted surprise.
I was fully prepared to give the story four stars, only because I cannot give a book five stars when there’s a character named Witchety. She’s a witch, FYI.
But corpse wine! Corpses in the wine caskets of the super special fancy insanely expensive wine that the families been making for 12 generations. How the fuck did nobody get sick after drinking the corpse wine in all that time?? And each generation of owners just decided, “Well, we make a lot of money, so it’s okay that there are corpses preserved in these caskets of this wine that we bottle every five years.” What the fuck is even happening here??
