Darcy Coates is no stranger to a Haunting novel, but this one here is something truly special. Creepy yet intriguing, and definitely something I'm glad I read during spooky season!

I have mixed feelings.

I love Darcy, and every book of hers I've read has been fantastic. This one was different than the others I've read, in the fact that it went much slower in the beginning.

I loved the end and that Margot figured out what the issue was, but it makes me wonder how no one else figured it out in all that time?!

I also really loved where she saw her parents and her old dog.

I have so many questions about the holes in the story.
SpoilerWhy was everyone so non-chalant about the curse and not really telling Margot about it? I get the whole "talking about it made it worse" thing, but, she had a right to know? Like, I'd be PISSED if that shit happened to me at night meanwhile all the people around me knew and just didn't tell me. Also, her parents...they shipped her away because they didn't want her to be a victim of the curse but then left her the house and the winery knowing what could happen to her? That seems pretty irresponsible to me, but what do I know? Also, part two, you mean to tell me that people have been drinking wine from barrels containing bodies for 200 years?! WHAT?!

The ending wrapped up really nicely though and I enjoyed the entertainment value of this read, but it wasn't really the "haunting" type of book I was looking for.

This book had me hooked so much, by a little over halfway I was crying over corpses.

Crying. Reading a horror novel.

I love a good mystery with my spooky reads and this delivered.

Phew, good stuff.

Margot believed her parents didn't love her -- why else would they give her up as a child and never speak to her again? Over a decade later, Margot has inherited their famous winery that sits atop the old gallows hill. She wants to learn about the family business and her past but something is off about the property -- there is more than one type of spirit aging here and the secrets did not start or end with her parents' death.

This served some serious Home Before Dark/Night of the Living Dead vibes but with great social commentary. Although the book takes place over only three days, it was a bit of a slow burn where the stakes start very high as opposed to ramping up. I was also able to pick out twist early but, again, the social commentary really made this book unique and great read. Definitely looking forward to my next Darcy Coates read.
