After reading two other books by Coates, I was really looking forward to this one. Unfortunately, I couldn’t finish it. What I loved about the past two, a diverse cast of characters that the author does a wonderful job of writing in their prose, was missing in this one. The main character, Margot, is dull and unsubstantial, not knowing a lot about her caused me to not be invested in the mystery of her past/ parents (which is a big part of the novel). While this one was a miss, I’m goin to continue reading Coates other novels!

Sometimes the horror genre can focus too much on scare tactics and lose sight of the story, but this one delivered a fantastic balance. It was a unique and interesting plot and I enjoyed it very much! The writing style isn’t strong, but the story makes up for it.

Margot Hull has lost her parents and gained a winery, all in the same day. Margot has no memory of her parents, so we see the struggle of her trying to navigate a new life in Gallows Hill while owning a new winery at the same time. But there's a catch, the winery is built on land where hundreds of people were hanged for their crimes.

I have never struggled so much with what kind of review to give a book. I'll start by saying Gallows Hill is a reeeeeally slow burner to the point where after about 150 pages I was ready to add it to my dnf pile. Not only is this book a slow burner, but I found it really hard to like Margot, I feel like I knew nothing about her yet I, as a reader, was supposed to follow her along for almost 400 pages. We're given small glimpses of her life before Gallows Hill but almost no context of Margot as a person, and to be honest, I found her initially really unlikeable. I ended up wanting to know more about the side character, Nora.

With all that being said, the last 150 pages is where Gallows Hill really shines, Margot's personality comes through as well as the book becoming more fast-paced. The horror element is prevalent throughout the book and really ramps up in the last third. I live in an old house that creaks sometimes, and I really scared myself on several occasions reading this

All of her books are kind of the same, however this one was a little bit different. I enjoyed reading it and I feel every chapter ends with a cliff hanger. If you like Darcy Coats read this book.
