Margot Hull has lost her parents and gained a winery, all in the same day. Margot has no memory of her parents, so we see the struggle of her trying to navigate a new life in Gallows Hill while owning a new winery at the same time. But there's a catch, the winery is built on land where hundreds of people were hanged for their crimes.
I have never struggled so much with what kind of review to give a book. I'll start by saying Gallows Hill is a reeeeeally slow burner to the point where after about 150 pages I was ready to add it to my dnf pile. Not only is this book a slow burner, but I found it really hard to like Margot, I feel like I knew nothing about her yet I, as a reader, was supposed to follow her along for almost 400 pages. We're given small glimpses of her life before Gallows Hill but almost no context of Margot as a person, and to be honest, I found her initially really unlikeable. I ended up wanting to know more about the side character, Nora.
With all that being said, the last 150 pages is where Gallows Hill really shines, Margot's personality comes through as well as the book becoming more fast-paced. The horror element is prevalent throughout the book and really ramps up in the last third. I live in an old house that creaks sometimes, and I really scared myself on several occasions reading this
