I read this in high school and I forgot how hilarious this was. I am very happy that I picked this up.

”I grant this food will be somewhat dear, and therefore very proper for landlords, who, as they have already devoured most of the parents, seem to have the best title to the children.”

Didn’t expect to enjoy this as much as I did!

I'm glad this wasn't written today or it may be taken seriously :|

Book 3 / 30 days Challenge

I feel like there are reviews longer than the actual book!
Honestly I can't say I had fun reading this book, I was actually grossed out at some parts which is so weird. I did laugh out loud because its just make you say "what the fuck" and nervous laugh about it, loved it and need to read more books from this author.

This is probably the greatest piece of satire that I have ever read, and possibly the one that effected the most change. By presenting itself as an honest op-ed piece, Swift was able to get people really talking about the problems of the poor, mostly Irish, lower class. By getting people to say "I would never!", he also got them to say "What would I?"

This is also a wickedly smart writing. Swift is one of my favorite writers, and that especially shows here. Being in on the joke makes A Modest Proposal hilarious. This easily sits on my shelf as one of my most influential works.

Swift's treatise lives up to its reputation, hilarious and somewhat offensive. His serious delivery of the prescription of eating Irish children still shocks and amuses, especially in its self-conscious spearing of prescriptive theorists. Change the name of the country and alter the situation a bit and the satire could be a contemporary work, if only we still had talented satirists. It was fun to finally read the essay in its entirety. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys jokes about eating people or who enjoy satire.
