A good story but I didn't enjoy it as much as I did her other writing. I still recommend it for people who like stories about mothers and daughters, especially complicated ones.

When we get Lu Ling's story in her own words - that's when it really gets me.
A charming story about identity, memory and how a persons past is shaping. Ruth, a ghost writer, is a protagonist stuck in an inferior, interior narrative. Her relationship with her mother Luling, is funny to read yet toxic. Although the narrative is fantastic, it took me a while to get into Part II. These chapters written by Luling about her life in 1930's China are translated by Mr Tang and read by Ruth. They are very sad and full of horrific events. Upon reading Luling's story, Ruth is changed. In knowing her mother more, Ruth discovers herself. At the close of the novel, Ruth is able to live the life she wants because she has a sense of who she is and where she has come from.
'The Bonesetter's Daughter' is for anyone interested in identity. Written with elegant prose and razor sharp dialogue, Luling and Precious Auntie are wonderful creations. In this surprising page turner packed with unexpected twists, the female voice is finally heard.

I had a hard time getting into the book. I didn't start to really enjoy it until it went into the story of her mother. Her mother was such a strong person even though she didn't know it because she never really talked about the past. This story was a little heart breaking but also gave you hope at the end. This was really interesting but I still liked the Joy Luck Club better. I'm looking forward to reading the other two books of hers I picked up.
