It was super interesting to see where it all began, when Spidey met each member of his OG Rogue's Gallery. What's the saying, "the more things change, the more things stay the same". I found this to be true as I read stories from over 50 years ago still ring true today. The writing isn't extraordinary in the sense of prose, but it does very much reflect how human nature transcends time.

I love fantasy/comics. You can tell such TRUTH in humanity through the guise of the impossible.

Growing up, I loved watching cartoons of my favorite superheroes on TV. I always had interest in reading the source material for the cartoons. But I could never get my hands on the right comic books to tell a linear narrative.

The reason I like Marvel Masterworks is because it collects all the original comics from when the character was first created and organizes in chronological order. I was now able to read the full story! This volume covers how Peter Parker gets his powers as well as the birth of some of his first enemies including Electro, Vulture, and Sandman. I found myself genuinely interested in learning the origins of the many themes surrounding Spider-man.

As for the actual stories, most of them were quite campy and simplistic. It was the 60's after all! But I remembered that Stan Lee and Steve Ditko were actually trailblazers in this type of story telling which put it all into context.

This book is no Moby Dick , but it's still a quick, entertaining read especially if you're a big fan of superheroes. Highly recommend!

oh man so campy and dated... a victim of it's own success I guess, you really have to imagine a world where this seems groundbreaking and not ubiquitously influential to understand why it was so popular and had such an impact.
