James Herriot is just a phenomenal story teller. Amazing descriptions and captivating stories. So fun to read aloud.

Another great installment of Herriot stories, from the farm, the pet surgery, and the military airfield. Here he recounts his veterinary recollections from the vantage point of his time in the RAF during WWII, proving once again the subtle excellence of his storytelling skill.

The RAF, the home-y people of the Dales, sweet and sad stories of animals and family and life. <3

James Herriot alternates between short tales of serving in the RAF during world war II, and memories of his vet work in Darrowby. He's a great storyteller.

All Things Wise and Wonderful takes us through Herriots early years in the RAF, intermixed with captivating stories about the animals of Darrowby.
I know I'll be reading it again in the future.
And now on to the last of the four volumes.

Another winner! These books combine two of my very favorite things: learning about people's lives and animals! So. Dang. Good.
Just like the other books in this series this one was filled with charming stories about the Yorkshire Dales and the industrious vet who drove his little car from farm to farm helping animals. Some of the practices are very outdated and many seem cruel by today's standards, but the clear love that James, Tristan and Siegfried have for animals is palpable and heart warming. I especially enjoyed the story of a stray dog who was hit by a car on the night of a big party, or the emotional tale of a cat who appeared on a kindly couple's doorstep with a very special Christmas gift. Yes I cried at work again. I refuse to feel ashamed.
Herriot's writing was again up to snuff, his voices and imagery vivid and his turn of phrase skillful. He writes in a style I just devour.

I defy anyone to dislike these books. They’re not page turners, and there’s no real plot, but they are just the most delightful stories and if you like animals even a little bit I think you should try them out.
