Unsurprisingly, Kuangs has knocked it out of the park. I think I like this more than Babel? It leans on the cheesier side, but in a charming and grounded way. Peter Murdoch is the stand-out imo, tho Alice in the last third of the book also really shines. As someone who did WAY too many proofs in college, the magic system was engaging and a blast to follow. wish we had gotten more with it, but I understand the restraint for fear of overwhelming the reader. with a plot that reads like a Greek epic and a whole boat load of philosophical references, it stands to be the staple for our generatios "Hell adventure."
I hope Kuangs next work is not on a college campus tho. I find the Oxford/Cambridge setting so pompous, truly. For Babel it worked better since the students were essentially abducted, but here it got a bit grating. Yes, Cambridge is a big deal, however: I do not care LOL. it just comes across as braggy after a certain point, and of course doesn't help that Kuangs is Cambridge grad herself. IDK this irked me in Babel too, since she's an Oxford grad as well. All this being said, I hope her next work is NOT set at a college, but if it turns out to be Yale (her OTHER graduate alumnus), I will not be surprised 😠the vast majority of this book being set in Hell saved it from my ire of Cambridge/pompous college settings LOL
