A humbling and personal account of a woman who paved the way for women in country music and was honest about her mistakes along the way.

I have watched the film more times than I care to remember, so I finally got around to the book. Loretta came from poverty. It is amazing to think she rose from that to become such an icon. She worked hard to get there. This is a breeze to read. It is folksy, I almost felt like she was sitting beside me, telling her story. I don't always agree with her social perspectives, but I respect that she is from a different generation. She apparently was more forthcoming about her marriage in a later book, but I think she approaches her life and career in an honest way. It was a pleasure to read, I was particularly taken in by her early years in Butcher Hollow.

This is the first audiobook I've ever listened to. Sissy Spacek (who played Lynn in the movie adapted from this book) reads the book in her characterization of Loretta Lynn, which was really great.

It's a long time since I saw the movie of this, it seems, and even then it felt like I'd taken too long to get around it, so I may have to watch it again now I've read the source because I can't really remember how much of the book made it to the screen. Anyway, what struck me most here is she's even kookier than I thought. Loretta Lynn is one of those people I really want to like, and generally do, but she makes it pretty hard sometimes. There's a lot here to raise just about anyone's eyebrows, but her unapologetic country style is very infectious, even inspiring. The audiobook reading by Sissy Spacek is a must. I kind of wish Goodreads had half stars for books like this because 3 is too low but 4 would be too high for now.

An interesting look into Loretta Lynn’s life. She didn’t seem to hold much back and doesn’t seem ashamed by any aspect of her life. How many mothers would admit they weren’t around enough for their children, or their nanny was more of a mother to the kids? Not many, but Loretta Lynn did. I was more interested in her life growing up in Kentucky because life in the Holler has always interested me. Her husband doesn’t sound all that great, but oh well.

So I read this for my 2019 reading challenge the category was a book by a musician and I never expected to like it as much as I did. The category was to pick a book by a musician and I just happened to be in Nashville, TN when I first looked at the challenge so I picked this book up at the Country Music Hall of Fame. I am not really a country music fan I took my mom to the museum for her birthday but I absolutely loved this book. I just picked her because she was one of my pawpaw's favorites.
