A fast read, one that my students are going to LOVE! I'm not exactly sure if it ranks as "fantasy", because there is no magic - but it's not really realistic fiction. It's like historical fiction set in another world?
Anyway, I was able to guess the "big reveal", but that didn't make me love it any less. Now I want to know how the rest of the story unfolds.

This book is awesome! How the author switches around the plot is very smart and cool. The fights, troubles and everything reach out to the readers.
This is my third read of this book. I love it. So many twists and turns. I love re-reading it knowing who Sage really is. I love Mott, he’s the best.
The only thing I wish was ficus that the boys were older. I think they should have been 16-17 and he should have been about 13 when he left. I have a 10 year old and a 12 year old and the maturity for any of this is not quite right. And they are pretty mature for their age.

I hadn't before heard of The Ascendance Trilogy, but I stumbled upon it doing an advanced search for YA audiobooks that were "available now" on OverDrive. (Man, I love that search feature!) As it turns out, I so enjoyed this book -- and had so much yard work to do in recent days -- that I managed to listen to the *entire trilogy* in under two weeks! When an audiobook is filled with so much action and adventure, after all, it can be hard to shut off the story and return to real life. ;-)
One of my favorite things about this series was that there were just so many mysteries to unravel. There were layers upon layers of secrets and lies. Just when I thought I finally had things figured out, there would be another twist and yet another secret revealed. Looking back through what had happened, these secrets always made sense... but they were just so darn well hidden that it sometimes floored me to think the author got me YET AGAIN! Aside from the action and mystery, I was also a big fan of Nielsen's character development. Even the secondary characters were so well developed that it felt almost as if they were new friends with whom I was becoming acquainted. And whether it was a friendship, a romance, or a rivalry that was forming, the interactions between characters were very compelling. Even better? These tales of knights, kings, warring kingdoms, conspiracies, and deceit are perfectly suited for advanced middle grade and young YA readers.
Happy Reading!

UGH. This was a really good series starter and kept me invested throughout the entire thing. It had moments that kind of lagged, but were also important in a way so it wasn't as bad as it could have been. I could kind of sense the Twist or whatever, but was really shocked when it actually happened. It had its problems that weren't really monumental, just typical first-of-the-series stuff and my own nitpickings, but overall it was a strong start and I can't wait to continue.

i mainly read romance focused books, but let me tell you this book was so good, i enjoyed the plot and the build up of sage's character, he is a mixture of jude duarte and prince caspian. also the plot twist???? i predicted it but i wasn't expecting it to be the truth. i am excited to finish the rest of this series
A cross between The Thief by Megan Whalen Turner and Anastasia. The Thief was better but I still very much enjoyed this and stayed up until 1am finishing it. I'm skeptical that the rest of the series will be as good, though.
