What a fun, adventurous, out-of-the-norm book! The book starts out with a bang and is quick-paced and fun to read all the way through. Sage is an especially great character because he's brave and good-natured but he's also risky and is full of teenage-boy-smugness. At the end of the book in the About the Author section Nielsen alludes to the fact that she based some of Sage's characteristics on two boys she'd known through a debate class she taught. I love it when authors build there characters off real people, it makes their characters rich, interesting, and believable.
The plot develops steadily and relationships to characters change constantly as they react to what's happening to them. I never got lulled into a sense of boredom waiting for something to happen, which is great! I typically need the plot to move quickly to keep my attention. There are several twists as well, some of which I'd figured out far before they were unveiled. Whether I was suppose to or not I'm unsure but I wasn't disappointed!
I'm definitely looking forward to the next installment!

The plot was kind of slow; while interesting, it was based more on secrecy and intrigue rather than action. However, I think the slow pace really worked out in the book's favor. Also, I knocked off one star because I guessed the plot twist too easily--.
Spoiler
I don't know why, but I sort of had this suspicion that Sage was actually Jaron all along
This series had my heart while I was reading it. Like I WAS LITERALLY OBSESSED WITH SAGE OMG. I really liked it because it was so fun and he's so funny and smart and clever and so likeable, and THE PLOT TWISTS WERE ACTUALLY INSANE and the characters are so interesting and I love the dynamic between Roden, Tobias, and Sage. Def gonna reread someday
HOLY SHIT!!
This book was so much fun! Holy crap on a cracker. I just, I can't even.
The plot was awesome. It had so many twists and turns and while some were predictable it didn't detract from my enjoyment of the book. The pieces of the story was intricately put together reminiscent of some of my favorite writers. It was not the fastest paced book which is surprising because of how much I think was packed in there, but it was really exciting none the less. It did strike me as more of a middle-grade story so there was not much depth in terms of the themes present, but it is nice to read a story for just the story.
The characters in the story in my opinion was the best part. I absolutely loved Sage. He is so flawed but I can't help but adore him. I also loved Mott, Imogen, and Errol (forgive me if the spelling is wrong because I listened to it on audiobook).
I'm very excited to continue on with this series and where Nielsen takes this story. Highly Recommend!

I read this when I was ten and loved it, and I still think it was a pretty solid read but I don’t feel too motivated to continue the series. Maybe someday though!
This book was pretty good. I liked the main character Sage, it was really fun to read from his point of view. Overall there wasn't anything wrong with this book, it just didn't stand out much. The plot was good but I saw most of the twists coming. The characters were enjoyable to read about but I'm not sure if they will be very memorable. idk I did enjoy reading it though. Definitely going to pick up the next one because I already own it.

My ONLY critique is that I wish the boys were aged up!! It's so hard to believe that Sage is 14 when he's one of the most clever and personable characters I've ever read. I get that he's beyond his years due to experience, but I'd never want a 14 year old running my country no matter their life story. Also I literally can't root for someone beginning to fall in love at that age. But otherwise, one of the best YA stories I've ever read, and I literally immediately reread it to skim for all the foreshadowing, and it hit so much harder the second time.
