Well, I made a mistake. I didn't realize this was a kid's book. While reading it I became increasingly annoyed with the juvenile writing and teeny bopper melodrama, only to discover that this is a book for 12 year olds. That makes sense.
I then considered having my oldest read it, he devoured the Percy Jackson books and loves adventure stories but this adventure never really took off. It was stagnant and boring and while the "twist" was satisfying (and predictable), it's not enough to make me want to subject my child to it. I want him to enjoy reading and not think of books as a chore. This was terribly disappointing for me.

This was SO fun to read. I loved the entire premise. The gravity of the situation definitely felt tense and deserved.
The main character could have easily been grating, but I found that his earnestness and care for others under that devil-may-care attitude made him feel more real and not annoying.

reread for the first time since it came out and glad to see that it still holds up for me. i knew what the twist would be but the lead up was still satisfying and done well. i feel like it would have been good as a standalone though so i'm hesitant to find out what will happen in the next books
Actual 3.5
I really enjoyed this book. However, it was too reminiscent of [b:The Thief|448873|The Thief (The Queen's Thief, #1)|Megan Whalen Turner|http://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1348276505s/448873.jpg|1069505]. Eugenides and Sage are both clever, despicable, and endearing. Unfortunately for Sage, Eugenides got the role first and cannot be redone. Much like Megan Whalen Turner's first book in the series, this book had some slow points. I think overall I liked this book more than "The Thief", but I still like Eugenides a bit more than Sage. Perhaps he will grow on me.

This book was a surprisingly good read. I wasn’t sure what I expected in terms of plot and pacing but both are well done. It’s worth it.

An amazing high fantasy book with a clever main character and a great plot twist! Not one of my favourite books, but certainly a good one!
