Sage and several other boys are picked from various orphanages to try to learn to impersonate the missing prince. They only have two weeks to pull it off. It is hard to decide if Sage is friends or enemies with the other boys. The plot moves quickly.
I started this book a number of years ago and just couldn't get into it. I am so glad that I pushed through a second attempt because I loved how this book came together in the end. Wow!

The False Prince by Jennifer A. Nielsen was a really good read. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's about a orphan boy named Sage in a kingdom called Carthya. A scheming nobleman named Bevin Conner comes up with a plan to place an impersonator of the king's long lost son on the thrown. Sage is one who is competing for the role along with three other orphans. Sage knows that he must be chosen to play the prince or he will be killed. He knows he must lie and cheat to make his way to the thrown, but as more and more lies unfold a truth revealed may be more dangerous than the lies. If you like fantasy and adventure then this could be the book for you. I could barely put it down.
I finally started reading this after years of sitting on my TBR pile when my teenage son tore through the whole series in a couple weeks. Well written, good pace to keep you interested, engaging story.
Wow. I flew through this book, and would've finished much sooner had I not had to work this weekend. This was such an exciting, interesting story, and while the way it ended could've been a standalone, I'm glad it's a trilogy as I want to read on!
I hated Cregan. I had mixed feelings on Connor. Somtimes he seemed to be trying to do the right thing, and other times he was an arse. Sage was a great protagonist. Annoying at first but I grew to love him. Likewise, Tobias also irritated me in the beginning but it wasn't until 3/4's of the way through when I began to like his character again. Roden was the opposite. Liked him at first. Hated him in the end. And my favourite character had to be Mott. I hope he has a big role in book 2.
The actual plot was brilliant. I've never read anything like it. I can not wait to continue on with this story soon.
This was a buddy read with the lovely TL whose own review can be found here:

No trying to decide how I feel about this book, I think it mostly comes down to "meh." The story lags a lot through the middle, and the ending is predictable. The predictable ending is made even more frustrating by the first person narrator - the author didn't write an unreliable narrator very well in my opinion, as some of the things that had to be held back to make the "twist" work were just obvious and annoying.
The world building was lackluster, and so was the character development. Only the main character felt at all fleshed out to me, and even he suffered in that department thanks to the secrets being kept from the reader throughout most of the book.
This is apparently the first book of a trilogy, but the ending of this one stands on its own, and I have no desire whatsoever to continue on to the next two books.

This book was recommended to me by students who loved it, and I'm happy that I followed their advice and read it. The book started out slow, but once I got into it I could hardly put it down. I loved all the little twists.
