"If I had to do it all over again, I would not have chosen this life. Then again, I'm not sure I ever had a choice." (p. 1)

In order to prevent civil war from breaking out, a nobleman named Connor has devised a dangerous plan to save the kingdom. He will find an imposter to impersonate the only heir to the throne, Prince Jaron, who is thought to be dead but whose body has never been found. Connor scrounges up a motley crew of orphans from around the country, boys with no hope and no where else to turn. But not everyone is on board with his treasonous plot.

I LOVED this book! I was immediatly drawn into the story. The plot was intricate but not heavily bogged down with extraneous detail. The characters were interesting and the writing was fantastic. And the end! Oh the end! I can't say more. Despite a few lags in the middle, I couldn't tear myself away from this story. You must read this book! It is Book 1 in a trilogy.

Predictable. The main character seemed to be written in order to fit the ending, but that caused a lot of him being alternately brash and brave and then stupid and scared. It felt like he wasn't solidified in my mind.

a bit predictable, but still fun.

What a breath of fresh air from the usual YA book (meaning romance) so let’s start with the characters. I absolutely adore Sage. His personality is the kind of personality I love in a character. Smart, witty, clever (wait, are witty and clever the same thing?) and an absolute fool. Now for the other false princes, Tobias and Roden. Tobias had a very interesting character. Smart, but in a book smart kind of way, not in a real world kind of way. Roden was also very interesting, I never expected him to team up with Cregan. I also didn’t like how he was an eager puppy, it was so annoying. Okay so now Mott, I really want to know his backstory and more of his personality. Does he like working for Conner? Did he develop fatherly feelings towards Sage? He left me with many questions, but to make this review sort of short (okay not really) I will stop now. Last up is Connor. Does he have mental problems? Did he actually think what he was doing was right? I guess so. Now for the plot. As I said before it was so refreshing not to have romance the center of the book (although I do enjoy romance). I have never read a book similar to this plot so I’m glad that I chose to read it. I loved how the plot had so many different twists and turns such as Cregan and Roden teaming up against the rest of the characters. So you may be wondering why I didn’t give this book a five. It’s because a book has to be a real eye opener or have amazing writing to truly be a five star book in my opinion. The writing was good, but not J.K Rowling good. But I still love this book and recommend it to everyone.
READ IT!!!!!!!

This story was very well written, characters were clear and interesting. Pretty typical type plot, but written solidly, and that was enough here.

I grew up with this series so it was a refreshing reread! I love the plot and I've always loved the characters. Reading this as an adult I have to say the main character's snarkiness gets on my nerves sometimes. But this book always gets me.

This was the first book by Jennifer Nielsen that I've read, and now I can't wait to start reading the rest of her books. The writing style and world building elements had me hooked from the first chapter. I can't wait to read the runway king next.

So the premise of this book is quite simple; the royal family is dead so a lord decided to turn an orphan into the supposedly missing prince so he can become a puppet King. It's not a hugely original plot and the writing was only so-so.

I found this book difficult to focus on most of the time. Whenever I made myself sit and read it I got through it quite quickly but I kept finding distractions so I wouldn't have to sit down and do so. Which is never a good thing when it comes to a book. The characters were okay but the twist was obvious and nothing about this book had nothing that stood out about it.

I've seen others say this book is okay to read as a stand-alone as the other two are not as good so I'm going to pretend this was a lone book and not continue the trilogy on.

So…. Apparently, I have already read this book. Oopsies. The whole time I was reading it, a little voice in the back of my mind was telling me the plot twist, and then it actually happened, and I realized, wait a minute, I’ve read this book. Oh well, it was still a fun read! Very fast-paced, a fun, classic fantasy. Hopefully I haven’t read the second one?

Really good storyline about an orphan that is enlisted into a plot to thwart the kingdom into inserting a false prince after the royal family is murdered. Sage is witty, quick thinking and short tempered, determined, and most of all super smart in his plan to be the heir to the throne over the other two boys chosen to compete for the spot. Big plot twist towards the end and I thought it was an overall fun story.
