Just when is Goodreads going to give me the abilities to rate things with half stars? I love Sage so much I feel bad leaving it at 3 stars but really he's the ONLY thing I cared about so

A nobleman brings four orphans to his estate in order to train them to impersonate a King's missing son. The nobleman is seeking the power of the throne and if a orphan is believed to be the king's son then the nobleman will control the kingdom.
I happened to pick up The False Prince at the bookstore, because I am a sucker for anything about princes and princesses. The book looked promising, so I decided to give it a shot.
Four orphan boys have been chosen by a nobleman to impersonate the long-lost son of the King and Queen, who have been murdered. Sage, protagonist and narrator of the book, is one of the boys chosen to compete for the crown.
I loved Sage’s quirky personality and wit, and the trouble he gets himself into when he refuses to be anybody but himself. Sage recognizes the dangers of playing such a dangerous game, but if he doesn’t play the game and win, it may cost him his life. He makes friends (and plenty of enemies) along the way, and I truly enjoyed his story, which became more and more complicated as I read on.
The book was funny and quick, and captured my attention until the last page. In the end, the story line was not as predictable as I’d thought it would be, which was a pleasant surprise. I will definitely be reading books 2 and 3.

this one came out of nowhere- it started with a bang and never slowed down! A lot of fantasy books are slow burners- taking time to set the stage and world-build. There is none of that here, the excitement starts on page one. For me, the book was a total page-turner (so to speak, since I listened to it. At 2x I binged it in less than a day!)- it was a book I stayed up late to listen to and wanted to listen to again right away when I woke up the next morning.
l really enjoyed the protagonist- his narration subverts expectation about first-person narration in a way I found fascinating. His personality is great, and I'm looking forward to reading the next book. I'm curious if the sequels maintain the pace! I also realized that this book was suitable and in fact would be a great book for my 10 year old son- while also not necessarily being something I think needs to be shelved in YA. (4 stars because it lacks some depth and breadth, maybe sacrificed for pacing. a 5 for readability and pacing though- if ratings were purely based on enjoyment it would be a 5)

This book was really interesting and fast paced and it kept me reading for 2 days straight. Literally! I would sit on my bed and just read it. Then I was devasted when I finished because there were no more! It's really hard for me to find a good book now- I feel like I've already read them. But this was no disappointment. Love, love, LOVED it!!
I found The False Prince to be very entertaining. Having read it as an adult (it being targeted more as a YA book) I did find myself more frustrated with the main character's choices which may not have bothered me as much if I had read it at a younger age (I felt this way sometimes when reading Harry Potter for the first time as an adult as well). But I was drawn in by the story and I am interested in following the rest of the books to find out what happens.
Hard to stay engaged, authors writing style is to hide things from the reader and act like it's a big surprise (when the way it was narrated doesn't leave gaps for these hidden things to happen)
adventurous
funny
mysterious
medium-paced
This was awesome! Intense, clever, and engaging story. I am excited to finish out the series!
