I'm not sure how I feel about this book, all told. I was really enjoying it up until
Spoiler Jewel gets raped
. That Duster would allow it, I had no doubt. That I was hoping for better from her, I also had no doubt. That Rath permitted it, that he was measuring Jewel up to the same standards as his sister, is disgusting.

And I'm afraid that mars the book in my mind. I will probably pick up the sequel...in a while. When my visceral reaction to an eleven-year-old's trauma and the failure of both her guardian and someone she had sworn to help fade.

I usually enjoy fantasy/adventure novels but this book felt long to me. I consider myself a fast reader and if I'm in the mood to read I can read almost anything. By the time I got to 80% I honestly considered abandoning the book. I can't exactly pinpoint why other than it felt like the pace was dragging.

It was okay. The book is edited well and fairly well written. The author cares about the characters, and that goes a long way with me.

I won't be continuing with this series, and this book reaffirms my distaste for multi-volume epics. Not due to this author or this book, but it's the format itself. When faced with the choice of reading eight more volumes of the same characters in the same world facing the same opposing forces and internal failings, or of reading eight other worlds and characters and dilemmas, the choice is easy. Eight is more than one.

That said, if you are a fan of stories than run to tens of thousands of pages, I recommend this one. I read enough to know the author won't let you down. If you like the first one, she'll bring you along for the others without disappointment.

This book inspired me to read several thousand more pages in quick succession, so I'm going to say I liked it.

I was already a fan of Michelle Sagara/West but found some of the books a bit heavy. And they are but I've still been on a kick lately. I really want to know what happens to these characters and what happens next, so I'm going to keep this short.

Big fat epic fantasy - a waif steals a bag in a magic filled city with hidden secrets and a complex social structure. And it seems like that waif might influence the fate of the world. A little dark, a little sad, and very complicated with strong characters and strong world building.

"he was not speaking to her. she knew it. and wondered about whoever it was he was speaking to. her oma had told her that the past was like a whole other country, with different rules, and no way of changing anything. she saw that in him now."
"you're still alive. you're not bleeding. nothings broken. you've no scars. and you've lost nothing important but stupidity" i supposed its good to lose stupidity.
"damaged people were the people she best understood. it took little to see his wounds; it took more to see what might exist beneath them, when all the scabs had cleared."
