Did not finish - I wanted to like this book, I really did. The problem is all too relevant and heartbreakingly on our doorstep. The writing is dense and changes point of view abruptly, but I could have lived with it if the plot was more compelling.

Ultimately, it feels self indulgent - to the point where I couldn't even skim read to the end. It boils down to a manic pixie dream girl swooping in starting yet another environmental activist movement but this time it saves the day. It is hard to swallow, becoming a plot that grates rather than inspires.

The idea that if only we let Republicans keep their guns and their stance on abortion and then they'll magically care about the environment also feels naive at best. My biggest problem with this book is that all these ideas have been tried and haven't moved the needle on climate action - the author, probably unintentionally, seems to suggest that all climate activism needs is a hot, young, somewhat manic leader - which as a trope feels a bit trite and in reality would be just another drop in the ocean...

900 pages of climate catastrophe is overwhelming, and this is not a perfect book at all. It's ambition however is admirable and (weirdly?) Markley tries to take his middle class readers with him - even if some of his narrative decisions are too conservative (and reactionary?) for my tastes: too many middle class characters; America-centric (to an astonishing degree: it is almost impossible for me to bel eve the USA will be the catalyst for change at any stage in the future. AND YET, those decisions DID make think, and pause, reconsider and reassess. An extraordinary, inspiring, necessary book.

This book hasn't left my brain since I finished it. It is filled with ideas of the future, gripping storylines and a writing style I thoroughly enjoyed. The downside here is there is ALOT of politics and policy discussion. As someone who enjoys that, even I found it a bit of a roadblock, as we would jump from a gripping story about a recovering addict to a full chapter on policy. The Deluge had me thinking about the realities of the future political landscape, I just found it didn't flow as well for the story. Beyond that, I would highly recommend the book if you are interested in the climate crisis, you enjoy multiple character storytelling and really, if you like reading about politics then you'll love this book.
