This was a fun fantasy comedy about Miles, a powerful mage and Havoc his demon companion (I say companion… Havoc has to follow all of Miles’s commands as he is bound to him… so even though Miles never really abuses that power, I guess Havoc is really more of a servant). Magical folks have been cropping up dead all over the city, so the local police have asked for Miles and Havoc’s help in figuring out what is going on.
So I thought the writing was good, but overall I struggled a bit with this one - I felt there was a lot of under-explained magic in one fairly short book, and whilst I enjoyed the snark and banter between Havoc and Miles, I just didn’t buy them as a couple? I think they worked much better as best friends… at the beginning of the book, Havoc is a bit of a womaniser and is very focussed on trying to bed as many beautiful women as possible. Miles gets injured during a fight and suddenly Havoc does a full 180 and immediately only wants Miles? With very little discussion? And miles is like ‘yeah okay… it might ruin 300 years of friendship, but let’s do it’. Not to mention the whole ‘Havoc has to obey Miles’s commands which (although Miles never controls him in that way during intimate moments) could have gotten real dicey real quickly.
How it feels like I have totally dunked on this book and I really don’t mean to have - like overall it was a fine book with some great elements, but having had a string of 5* reads recently, this one missed that mark for me.
I did really like the writing though, so I’m going to give the author’s ‘Hitmans Guide’ series a go, as a lot of folks have recommended it :)

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/6.
🌶️🌶️/5.
What a very refreshing relationship.
Miles is a powerful mage and 300 years ago when something happened he bounded Havoc (a Demon) to him however because Miles bounded Havoc to him, he feels like he is a slave and hates to help Miles whenever he needs but somehow he ends up always saving Miles or helping but then they bicker like old ladies which is fun.
Havoc seems like a deviant demon and while he is a bit ridiculous, he has feelings and some of them started to flourish towards his "master".
I liked that they started to slowly open up to each other and openly revealing their feelings towards one another.
What I really loved was that they already had this friendship that started way back when so they already knew everything about the other.

This book in one sentence: Miles, a powerful mage bonded to a snarky demon, investigates a series of murders that might have something to do with his tragic past.

This is really funny, and I appreciate the characters remain snarky through the whole relationship.
Alice Winters never disappoints me. She keeps me laughing through every book.
I love Miles and Havoc. Their banter was perfection and just what I needed after several emotional books.
I can't wait to see what these two and their friends get up to next.

Omg some parts of that banter was over the top. I liked the world and I laughed a lot. Yet the relationship confused me. Havoc was just so...... out there.

This was wonderfully fluffy and funny. So many characters in such a short book, though, but the adorable MC's made up for it.

It's not you, it's me. I really didn't like this. I struggled...
