Paranormal + snarkiness + Alice Winters brand of humor = my cuppa

I liked this start to a series. It had the laughs you expect in a novel from this particular author. What kept it from being a total hit for me was the chemistry. I don't know why but I just didn't feel the pull with Miles and Havoc ya know? It didn't click with me like it usually does in other works by this author. I felt their bond as very close companions, but not the heat. On top of this the plot seemed a bit slow going. This by no means I hated this book or didn't enjoy it. I did. I just didn't enjoy it as much as I usually do with Winter's books. I'm looking at you Hitman series. I guess it's hard to top a character as lovable as Leeland.

The side characters weren't as interesting to me either. Usually they help drive the plot with the comedy. We didn't really get to know them very well, but some of the banter was still there. The culmination of this book ends with just part of the drama being irradiated. The" major baddie" so the speak is still out there and the relationship between Miles and Havoc is more on the HFN fence. It seems a second book was slated for this series but since this book released in 2017 and it is now 2020 as I am reading it I do not know if this will be written or when. I did like the book enough to continue on. Maybe it's just because I finished Hitman, Villians, and Vex a Vampire first, which were all top reads for me. I'd place this one about 3.75 stars

Didn't like the prequel? Give this a shot anyway. Less annoying, OTT, ADHD energy. This features different (better) characters.

I quite liked this one! It felt a bit like Dresden Files but queer and spicy. I really enjoyed Dresden Files and totally see the potential to make it exactly like this (to be honest I had some thoughts myself when reading the series). My only issue with this is that I felt it was rushed. Especially the relationship between the protagonists could have been a touch slower. I know they had a whole back story but to me it felt like it went from we're just work partners/maybe friends to lovers/we're in love much too fast. Also, I thought the smut was surprisingly lacking. Considering these characters I had high hopes.
Definitely wanna continue the series! But unfortunately, it was just short of 4 stars.

Weak 1st book in the series

I was recommended this book series after finishing VRC.

This book felt very empty to me. Bland for a long time, seemed to just plod along with no where to really go. 40% through I felt like I needed to swap books. It was an effort to finish.
Nothing was truly happening except that everyone reads books. Yes. We get it.
The "humor" wasnt there and quite forced. I didn't laugh or chuckle at anything like other books.
Wasn't sure if the plot could hold out. No character depth. So many characters introduced it made the story get even watered down, but again, no depth, just there for the background. Each of these people have about 1 or 2 sentences to describe them and its just rinse and repeat.
The 300 year build up to the romance was dull.

Hilarious ride

I loved this book. It was funny, action-packed but amazing heart warming as well. The main characters were great and the secondary characters were as well. I can't wait until the second book is out.
