Dark stuff. I wasn't expecting it to be so dark, as I go into books blind on purpose. But wow! What a book! Mishima is clearly as good of an author as everyone says. I feel like this is not as good of a book for Mishima-newbies as everyone says though. Shook me! But I am ready to dive into more of his work.

4.5/5 - The shadow of Japan's former glory, looming in bitter anticipation over the heads of a confused youth, alienated from their families and country, filled to the brim with nefarious, nihilistic tendencies. Mishima vents his frustrations with the post-war mentalities of his countrymen inside this grim and despondent narrative. Mishima's writing is often gorgeous, with an intricate simplicity that's just to die for. The man himself is fascinating, so I feel an urgent need to read more of his books.

Really slow book. Read about 80% of the book until real interesting events started to unfold. Didn’t really like or understand the characters. Maybe I just didn’t get the book altogether. However, the last line of the book was hard af.
