This is the kind of gripping, layered story you hope to sink into with every new book. Haunting, sweet, dark, and complex, with vivid and memorable characters and places. The story and its telling are asking real questions, in spite of its playfulness and sadness.

Every chapter filled me with dread that something terrible was about to happen. Beautifully written. A few holes. I'm still not sure what happened at the end, and if it's what I think it was, I don't buy it.

A bit long and hard to follow at first, with many flashbacks that only start to really connect in a clear way with the present storyline near the end, which is where it gets really interesting. A lot stays mysterious, even after the last page, which leaves questions with no answers; it's psychedelic, like in a dream and weird, with lots to analyze and understand.

Only problem is that you need to be in a certain mood to really get into the story and, sadly, I wasn't.

I really enjoyed both the ebook and audiobook versions of this novel. It ticked all the right boxes for me:

Upstate New York setting; yes!
Interesting characters; yes!
Creepy cults; yes!
Supernatural mysteries; yes!
A touch of romance; yes!

I found it to be just the right blend of spooky and sweet.

Written in a kind of stream of consciousness, this fever dream of a book didn't sit well with me. I wasn't in the right mood to really dive into this book- it's not really a read right before bed kind of book for me. There is a ton of detail packed into the paragraphs, and I can see it being a breakthrough in literature, but its style is just not for me.

There's weird and then there's weird for weirdness' sake. Unfortunately this book is full of the latter. I kept reading, hoping for some kind of payoff or resolution. There is one of sorts, but it's flimsy and feels tacked on.
