Reckoning with your place in the world when someone you cherish is in the battle for their life with their mental health disability- WOOF.  This story is beautiful and parts of my experience were represented in ways i've never seen before. I feel whole, and I will most definitely be returning to this story. Thank you to the creators.

Be aware that this book immediately starts with the main character finding out her best friend has attempted and is hospitalized.

It explores the journey of young adulthood and the transition into viewing oneself as a whole independent unit separate from friends and other loved ones.

While the art was beautiful and brought the story to life, the magical realism elements that suddenly developed felt unexplained and not processed or addressed. I would have liked to see more depth and exploration of emotion and confusion as her ceramic creations came to life. Without that the magical elements felt almost insignficant, especially given how the book had started and how intensely we had seen her react.

The connection between art and emotions works really well here on more than one level.

Also the internal fight with one self about how to deal with a close friend that is struggling is quite in point.

The artwork is beautiful, but I wish it had more color like the book's cover. The pages that include splashes of color are intentional, though, which pushes Jade's feelings more to the reader. I like way the themes are approached sensitively with Jade's internal thoughts encased in their own bubbles. At times the multiple people talking within one panel is confusing. For the content of the art camp, budding teen romance, and a friend's suicide attempt, I expect more depth in exploring each concept. Each part of the setting and plot felt brushed over, and even a graphic novel can tell the story more thoroughly than that. Disappointingly, I never got a clear idea of what caused Jade's art to come alive, either.

Summer Art school isn’t going as planned for Jade. She was supposed to start with her best friend, but her friend is in the hospital following a suicide attempt. Jade works her feelings into art that keeps coming to life. I loved this coming of age art story of healing and self-discovery.
