Book number five of the Gone series was pretty much everything that I’d expected from Mr. Grant: Heart-stopping suspense in a relentless pursuit to make a basket case out of his readers. Well, you’ve done well, Mr. Grant. Bravo.

The kids of FAYZ have gone into two separate camps; and at the helms of these camps are brothers, Sam and Caine. For the moment, the siblings have come to some sort of temporary peace. But deep into the mine, the gaiaphage is anything but. It is terrified; it wants to get out to be reborn. Little Pete was his hope but his death ended that plan. The darkness, however, has a plan B.

As the slow build of terror comes to a simmer, the entire dome is slowly being swallowed by utter darkness. Darkness means no food; no food means hunger; hunger means chaos. But they have bigger problems to face first: Drake – the evil whip-hand is looking for blood. Commanded by the gaiaphage, Drake would do everything it asks especially if it meant he'd be able exact his revenge on the one he hated more than he hated Sam and his crew: Diana. He also realized that this time, no one will stop him from killing those he abhors. There's no rest for the weary of Perdido Beach and Michael Grant sure made this prevalent with every agony and suffering – both mental and physical – that he’d put his characters through.

Brand new terror and unspeakable pain - Fear was a different torment somehow; it was a slow progression of trepidation, and delight in pain in the most perverse way. Michael Grant rooted right through the minds of these kids and put them through some torture of a different kind. There were perspectives that gave me a more in-depth look into the state of mind of these kids. They were scared, of course, but the author dug deeper into their psyches. Also, some of the secondary characters have been given more play (which I loved!) and it almost felt like I was meeting them for the first time.

The ending was hopeful but sad and it ripped me. Without giving anything away, let’s just say that some of the kids of Perdido Beach are not feeling so hot about the dome lifting.

VERDICT: Michael Grant is a god; I either love him or fear him for his rich but disturbing imagination. The subsequent books to this series were my annual torment and delight. I looked forward and dreaded reading them just because my heart goes through calisthenics of a different kind when I do. Fear is by far, my favorite of the series because gosh darnnit, I can see the LIGHT at the end of the tunnel – or in this case, the mine. I am so ready for these kids to have a happy ending even though I know Michael Grant is probably going to make them work extra hard for it.

I loved this book. I think it was even better than Hunger. These books just keep getting more and more brutal and it's amazing.

Some things I really enjoyed in Fear:

1. The relative peace at the start. Even though it's obviously temporary, it's really nice to start a book in a fairly nice setting. The split groups have both worked out a system that works for them, and even though Caine is obviously not an ideal leader, things work out decently for a while.
Spoiler

2. Seeing the outside of the FAYZ. These chapters were some of the most interesting in the entire book. Seeing the parents and how the rest of the world reacts to the FAYZ is really interesting.

3. Albert. I love that he was prepared. I love the twist where he had the missiles and honestly, I love that he's finally showing the world that he's a really selfish person.

4. Caine's power being taken from him (if only temporarily) was really good. His powers were (part of) what gave him power over everyone else, seeing him helpless and reduced to nothing but a laughing stock was shocking but a good twist. His entire character this book was handled really well, I think.

5. How some of the former "bad guys" were shown a lot more sympathetic. Diana and Orc come to mind. I loved Orc this book, he's quickly becoming one of the characters I'm most invested in. I just felt terrible for Diana through most of Fear, but I love that she's a really strong person.

6. Sam and Caine teaming up at the end to stop Gaia was awesome.

7. I loved Gaia in general. Terrifying!

8. The fact that the barrier became transparent at the end was amazing. Now everyone can look in, see the terrible things that have happened (and are still happening) to their children but not do anything to help. I'm really excited how this will influence events in the FAYZ in the next book.

There's probably a lot more things about this book that I liked but I'm keeping it at this. Putting it in a list like this makes it easier for me to remember everything. I loved this book and I'm excited for the last one.

We are going to keep this simple. This book gets five stars.

My personal opinion: Damn. That is all I really have to say. Damn, this book was amazing;

Characters (5/5) - Everything was coming full circle and it simply made my day.

Plot (5/5) - Once again; everything is coming full circle-'Nuff Said

Pacing (4/5) - My only deduction really. Ending felt slightly rushed. But otherwise->Spot on!

Prose (5/5) - Verbose, disgusting, vibrant, and beautiful. Grant is a master of the language.

World (5/5) - And it got better. If only ratings could transcend a five.

Total: (You know this is going to round up to five stars) 24/5 = 4.8 -> 5.

I really want to read the conclusion. Shame I've got's to wait a year... :(

This series is going towards mystery thriller as the children mysteriously cut-off and domed part of San Francisco known as the FAYZ, after surviving all the adults being Gone, countering the Hunger wit minimal resources, a cacophony of Lies to safeguard interest of there own and community so that things don't turn into chaos, and then an actual Plague, that can wipe out the FAYZ community if they conquered them,  the original Perdido Beach community has finally splintered! One has gone AWOL, one rules his own kingdom, one wants to be a FAYZ millionaire, and there's the first FAYZ baby on the way. Meanwhile our main hero is bored with the good life on the freshwater lake, but not for long, as tendrils of darkness start appearing on the barrier - they gets a bit worried, because other than fear itself, the only thing they truly fears, is the dark!

This is the new age of young adult long-form story telling, a huge diverse, enigmatic and fully released cast of kids with hardly a trope in sight. The queen, is the 13 year old pig-tailed red-headed girl Breanna, 'The Breeze', what a great character. Even the ' villians ' are thoroughly multi-dimensional. As ever the most important point about this series, is that Michael Grant never lets readers, or the cast themselves ever forget that they are children; oh, and he should give lessons on how to build climatic ending
