Fun to revisit something I read as a youngster. The one thing that still holds up after all these years is the characters. It's a great fantasy ensemble

Adorable

Well it was quite a journey reading it aloud--almost two years, but we pressed on and finished tonight! I was quite surprised by pretty much every turn of events in this book, even at the end. Then we looked at the pronunciation guide in the end and realized we had been pronouncing several names incorrectly, although most I got correct. Darn Gaelic names! I think we both enjoyed it, and the time spent together reading. I hope he will suffer through me reading the next one to him, and the next, and the last.... I better hurry--at this pace I'll never finish the series before he goes off to college!

As for the story itself, well, I'll let other reviews cover that. I'm tired and was only hoping to offer the personal angle about the book anyway. For such a classic, this 2nd book of Prydain (no matter how it is pronounced, although my son preferred my incorrect pronunciation PRY-dane) was a fun story. Long live Taran Assistant Pig-Keeper!

The Black Cauldron was definitely a step up in storytelling from The Book of Three and you can see why it was a Newberry Honor recipient. While the story and characters are relatively simple, the book has heart and is immensely enjoyable. What more can/should we want from a story?

This is not really the edition I have (mine is a Dell Yearling Book), but I had to choose it for the cover art.

This book really focuses on not letting pride and honor get to your head and make enemies of the people who could be your friends. I really like this book and series.
