Such an improvement from The Book of Three! The tone is more serious, the whole effect is more mythical.
Taran is invited on a quest to go and help destroy the black cauldron, which is responsible for creating a host of warriors that can't be killed. The evil Lord Arawn needs to be stopped before he destroys all of Prydain. Taran's faithful sidekicks are back as well as a host of other characters who help Taran to learn and grow.
I enjoyed Taran's encounter with the 3 witches. They were both threats to his quest but also humorous as they remember their time with Dallben, Taran's benefactor.
I debate which characters I like best in this series. Gurgi and Fflewddur Fflam are definitely two of them.

so this is book two in a series and i think reading book one is kind of vital for knowing who characters are that don't feature in the cinematic masterpiece that is the black cauldron (1985). also apparently the horned king was only in book one so that was personally a pretty big letdown for me. should i just read the whole series?? lemme know!
Much like the first book in the series, this book was also a lot of fun! There was action, adventure, betrayal. All in all a great book! Though a bit darker...okay, a lot darker...than the previous book I found myself liking it even more for that fact.
I think I might have enjoyed this more if I'd read it right after book 1. I suspect I'd have really enjoyed this one as a young teen.

I was a little afraid that Prydain wasn’t quite as good as I remembered after I finished rereading The Book of Three, but rereading this dispelled that fear quickly. This is the Prydain I remember. It’s good to be back
Great second installment, introduction of well-developed new characters. Beautifully done themes to discuss.,
I loved this. A terrific expansion on the previous book's characters, with deeper themes, more challenging character development, it's funnier, has some great themes on manhood, virtue, and honor (as well as some Christian themes, I might add), all while remaining a really charming kid's fantasy/adventure book. An excellent example of how to do a sequel right.
It took me a while after the first book to seek out this one, but I already can't wait to grab the third.

I felt a re-read was in order in honor of Lloyd Alexander.
