Poison is a cute and fun fantasy set in a uniquely whimsical fantasy world. It’s quick paced, fluffy, and there really isn’t anything bad per say it just wasn’t for me.

Kyra is a pretty typical heroine, she is sixteen, pretty, and is a potions master. The thing is, she seems pretty young to be considered a “master” of anything. I liked Fred, the love interest, well enough but he was a bit boring, just really normal. Rosie the pig DOSEN’T ACTUALLY MATTER AT ALL. I’m angry about that, if you offer me a pig give the pig a plot.

I’m not the biggest fan of the writing, the characters spoke in a way that was almost completely like our world with too many “cools” and “awesomes”. The characters sounded so immature! The build up took a long time, the author hides so much for so long, but just two or three chapters to wrap up EVERYTHING. However, there was a well written plot twist.

I thought the world was interesting, but I don’t particularly care for especially whimsical settings. The potions were cool but I didn’t feel like the witches and crime lords had a place.

I can’t help but feel that if the author had more time with this book it could have been something really special. I was expecting a bit more from this but it wasn’t awful, I just didn’t care for it.

I went into this book with some pretty high expectations, and let me tell you, Poison did more than exceed my expectations. It completely OBLITERATED my expectations.

I cannot even handle my feelings about this book. I'm so sorry for this train wreck of a review, but I honestly can't do anything but GUSH about this book. It is so good. So so so so so SO good.

Poison is fresh and fun and original and the kind of thing I didn't realize I wanted to read but really I've been wanting to read so badly. Does that make sense? I dunno, it does in my brain. :P

Listen, I realize I gush about books a lot. But my feelings about Poison are totally different from my normal fangirling. I read it about a month before writing this review, and it has NOT LEFT MY BRAIN. I still think about this book all the time, and I seriously have nothing negative to say about it. I don't say this often, but I would recommend this book to ABSOLUTELY ANYONE. It doesn't matter what you usually read or what you're in the mood for. Trust me, you're in the mood for this!

If you read this book and don't like it, I give you permission to come to my house and punch me in the face. YOU THINK I'M KIDDING?! TRY ME.

Okay, okay. I might be going a little too far. BUT I DON'T CARE, OKAY? My love for this book is so intense and I am not ashamed!

Poison is high fantasy, which usually seems to be a pretty dark and serious genre. But Poison is different. It has the adventure you come to expect from a high fantasy, but it's also light and fun and hilarious. Poison is a new and exciting take on the high fantasy genre, and it is exactly the kind of book that the YA world needs more of.

The main character, Kyra, is a total badass, while still being vulnerable at the same time. I ADORE HER. Can she please be my best friend?! And to make this book a thousand times better, there is a cute boy! His name is Fred, he's super cute and sweet, and...can he be my best friend, too? Please?! But before you go all "OH NO A ROMANCE EWWWWWW", you should know that the relationship between Fred and Kyra, while being extremely adorable and shippable, is not even close to being the main focus of the book. Their relationship perfectly balances out the super intense action-packed parts of the book.

Another thing you need to know about Poison is that there is an adorable little pig named Rosie who is kind of a huge deal. I didn't think it was possible to love a fictional pig so much, but um, apparently it is TOTALLY possible! I also love Langley, who is totally the perfect match for Rosie. So what if he's a dog? I think Rosie and Langley might be my new OTP. I ship them so so so hard. (I'm weird, okay? Don't judge me. :P)

I could probably gush about this book for YEARS. But I'll stop now so that you can go get a copy of Poison and experience its awesomeness for yourself.

Poison was just as delightful and fun as I thought it was going to be. It was a little confusing to start with, because Kyra, once a Master Potioner, has been on the run for about three months; the author had to backpedal a little bit and explain why Kyra is on the rune and her previous role in the kingdom. After the slow-ish start, the pace picks up and the action begins.

Interesting read. At first I worried that the book would be too fantastical and juvenile, but the author pulled off this serious, yet whimsical writing style. Would definitely recommend.

Actual rating: 3.5 stars (not going to round it up)
I'm usually pretty generous with my ratings and this book is no exception. For some reason, I had quite high expectations for this book (interesting premise, very nice cover, overall good ratings on GoodReads, etc.), and I think that was the problem - I shouldn't have expected so much. This book was good, but definitely not great.
Since Poison is a standalone (and a also pretty short one at that), there was almost no room for character development or world building. The story itself was okay, and even though there was 1 or 2 plot twists that I didn't really see coming, it was still also quite predictable; there were many elements that I've seen in other books before, and it could also get way too silly for me at times.
The characters were actually quite likable, though; I didn't love them, but I definitely didn't dislike them. Our main female protagonist Kyra wasn't annoying or whiny or anything, so that's a plus.
The romance was cute (too cute maybe?), but not my favorite part of the story, which I was kind of disappointed by.
However, I wouldn't say that this book didn't have a potential, because it definitely did - as did Bridget, the author. I just wish she had enough time to develop the story more (I do know about the sad tragedy).
Overall a fun book and a good story that I would recommend for younger readers (I was 18 when I read it); don't expect too much from it and you'll enjoy it.

This book is delightful. It delivers on all of its promises: fantasy, romance, adventure, fun characters, great plot twists, everything. I finished it in two days. 5/5 do recommend.

I worked with Bridget on this one so am not to be trusted as a critical voice, but I love this book.
