This Sherlock Holmes story set in the world of horse racing was an alright enough mystery that I enjoyed the read of it, but it didn't leave much of an impression on me after finishing it. Sherlock Holmes does what he does best: finding obscure clues and noticing things others don't, leading to the successful solving of the case. It's a fun, short read, especially for fans of Doyle and as such I'd recommend it to read if you have some time to spare and enjoy puzzling the clue to a mystery before checking whether you were right at the end

Now this is more in line with what I expect from a Sherlock Holmes mystery. Although I have to say that my only exposure to this character has been through movies and TV shows, and I wasn't expecting him to be so... polite! He even showed some humility in some of the previous short stories I read, and in this one he admits one of his theories was "a long shot." I like him.

"The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime" appears herein. "The Dog did nothing in the nighttime."

Excellent description "the horses were so close together than a carpet would have covered them".
Overall, an interesting Sherlock Holmes installment.

This was a fun little mystery. As someone whose just started reading Holmes, it's interesting how Sir Doyle presents the narrative. How it seems almost simple. I'm thoroughly enjoying my new foray into the world of Sherlock Holmes !
Also- I used the audiobook to get into the mood and after the first 10 minutes, was so engrossed in the tale that I abandoned the audiobook and read it. But would definitely recommend the audiobook for those who want to read Sherlock Holmes but can't seem to get into the story.

From BBC Radio 4 Extra:

The sleuth heads to Devon, when a racehorse favourite disappears - and his trainer is found murdered. Stars Clive Merrison.

Holmes investigates the disappearance of a champion racehorse and the murder of its trainer. All taking place in the atmospheric setting of Dartmoor. The tale is not overly complicated with baffling clues and as such it's one of the better Holmes stories. Little by little Holmes puts together pieces of what might have happened by questioning servants and stable boys. Then dealing with the owner of a nearby estate who knows something about the whole episode. It also features some of Conan Doyle's most effective plotting, hinging on the "curious incident of the dog in the night-time:"

Clever and probably one of the more realistic Holmes mysteries.
