This is not a book I should have read at work in front of people. Heart-wrenching, emotional, and poignant. I think this will be a must-read in classrooms for kids one day.
side note: technically this book takes place in Chicago and could be used for my USA Reads, but I am also reading Devil in the White City for that. I added The Blood of Emmett Till for my Mississippi book because of this.

Read with my junior high student. Good for middle grades.
A safe middle grade recommendation for readers who want The Hate U Give. What didn't resonate with me was the perspective of the police officer's daughter, and I wanted more from Jerome's alive perspective.
I just don't know how to rate this?
This book would be so important for the kids in the community it impacts. I think the kids I work with (upper middle class and white) would be confused and horrified by this book. That illustrates the disparities in our society and our experiences more than anything, I think.
Jerome is playing with a toy gun in his front yard when he's murdered by a cop; this is patterned after Tamir Rice's murder, though Tamir features as a different character in the story. In death, Jerome roams as a ghost to try to understand WHY this happened. He's able to talk to Sarah, the cop's daughter, and Emmett Till who comforts him and teaches him about the history of murdered black boys in America.
There were so many conversations between Sarah and Jerome that would have a tremendous impact on the readers. It really makes you reflect on the current situation of America.
warnings - Emmett Till's murder is graphically described; adults would definitely want to touch base with children if they read this on their own.

This is deemed a kiddos grade book, but is a compelling read for adults as well. The entry point before The Hate You Give.
There is a sense of hopelessness and hope interweaved into the fabric of this book about the aftermath of a young black boy who is killed by a white police officer. He joins the thousands of other “ghost boys”, who left the earth too soon. As he watches his family grieve and the trial progress, he tries to understand what his purpose is and why he hasn’t passed over, we are taken back to slowly unravel the events that led to his shooting.
