Cilka's Journey

This book was so devastating! It’s the  sequel to the Tattooist of Auschwitz where Cilka's journey after her time in Auschwitz is told. After the war, while the camps were liberated she doesn’t get to enjoy her freedom. She is taken to a prison camp in Serbia after being as a Nazi collaborator.

While it was so heartbreaking to read it was impactful. So easily people forget that although most were liberated from the concentration camps at the end of WW2, for some the horrors only continued. So many were wrongly accused of being collaborators when all they did was try to survive. These prisons were also filled with innocent Russian civilians for the most ridiculous of crimes as  the Soviet Union was still under Stalin’s ruthless control.

While the book was devastating, I really enjoyed this look into a forgotten history for me. This book did feel a bit less personal than the first book - as it was based on second hand accounts of people who know Cilka and not her first hand account of events. But I was so fascinated by this incredible woman and the strength she had at only 17! It was truly remarkable.

Overall this was a great read and I highly recommend it for anyone interested in this history. But be prepared with the tissues because it’s a heartbreaking story.

I TORE through this. Like stayed up way too late bc I couldn’t put it down. I liked it better than the tattooist. Not entirely sure why it was so captivating but hospital work in Siberia got me I guess.

I find this quite hard to rate.
The Tattooist of Auschwitz for me was quite an amazing story but could have been better written, however, it was certainly not bad and I enjoyed it. I find that Cilka's Journey was more beautiful in many ways, and believe that Morris may have been more passionate and intrigued by Cilka's story than Lale's, perhaps as she never met Cilka and this is more of a fictional piece than The Tattooist of Auschwitz, it is not my place to say though.
The book was a nice, pretty easy read, it is amazing to read about the lives of these incredible people who lived through hell.

Definite MUST READ. You could read this without reading the *Tattooist* but I would suggest 100% reading *Tattooist* first. It is there that you learn the backstory of all that Cilka endured -- which makes this novel so much more powerful!

Another wonderful novel by Heather Morris. After reading the Tattooist of Auschwitz, I had to read the second novel, telling more of the life of Cilka. Although not all of this novel is historically accurate, Heather Morris did tremendous amounts of research to provide readers with as much of Cilka's story as she could.
This book is heartbreaking to know that this actually happened to people, not once, but twice.
She really was such a strong person, to go through so much at such a young age, but surviving.
