Well written so a quick read but nowhere near as compelling as The Tattooist of Auschwitz. Felt repetitive at times. Unbelievable to think that a girl forced to have sex with SS officers to survive a concentration camp is then sentenced to 15 years in the Gulag for sleeping with the enemy. Humans can be awful.

This is a rounded up 3 for me. The book itself was good. It's just not like Tattooist. It's way more fiction. They didn't know Cilka and have never talked to her. The book is based off the small glimpse from Lale and the records and recollections they have gotten from records. When you get to the end and read the details of what is completely not true, it kinda ruined it for me.
HOWEVER, I still think everyone should read it. We all should know what some went through even after the torture of Auschwitz. It makes you feel different. In the end, I hope it makes every one stop for a second and think how very different our lives could be.

There is a lot of controversy about this book because it is a fictionalized account of a real person's life and experiences..... never the less it is a very well-told story of the hope and endurance that can carry one through devastating cruelty and loss.
