Cilka's Journey

Wow, after reading The Tattooist of Auschwitz and learning of Lale, I didn't expect to be even more moved by Cilka's story, but I was. To suffer all she suffered in Auschwitz and then to have to face the gulags for so many years and the harsh treatments and horrors of being a woman in that situation, my heart just breaks for her. I think many people thought that the war ended after Hilter was defeated, but for many like Cilka, the nightmare was only half over. I can definitely understand why Cilka was the bravest person Lale ever met.

After reading the tattooist of Auschwitz, I really wanted to see what Cilkas story was…

Even though some of it was made up of her time in Auschwitz’s and being imprisoned afterwards… which is also heartbreaking that she was imprisoned for simply surviving….

But I was happy to read in the end that she indeed did survive and got some wonderful years and to be loved by someone.

CILKA IS COMPLETELY INCREDIBLE, just from hearing Lale speak of her it sounds like she was amazing. 😭😭❤️

This was just as good as The Tattooist of Auschwitz, but artistic liberties were taken. I appreciated the perspective showing Cilka as a sympathetic character, but at times I found her mental commentary too unbelievable/simplistic. Overall it was a really engaging, thought-provoking read.

This book felt as thought it had a little more substance than The Tattooist, and the characters had more depth. I still feel like it was lacking
