It was such a sweet story. Christine befriended Moon, a girl who was in many ways different from herself - self-possessed, confident, curious and brave - who brought Christine out of her shell and encouraged her to explore. Their friendship hits a snag when Moon got closer to another girl and Christine did something mean. It also turned out Moon's visions were the symptom of a medical issue, and she had to have surgery. In the end, the two girls were tighter than ever and Moon forgave Christine for her betrayal - cue big happy dance sequence for the finale. It's interesting in the afterwords, the author talk about her own illness, and how personal the story was to her as an outlet for her own experience. It had cute drawings (but I don't know why she made Moon's dad so hideous though, lol) and a short read - check it out!
Graphic novel. Middle grade. Chinese-American.
Story: Inspired by real events, this semi-memoir tells the story of Christine, a young Chinese-American girl whose parents have high expectations of the way she is dressed, her violin playing and Chinese culture and knowledge.
Language: Jen Wang's style is colorful and playful, with a great ability to show movement and senses while keeping the focus on the characters and main themes. Set in near past in a suburb of US, the story has deep topics and realistic children and choices in it. A brief note from the author in the back provides extra context to the story.
Read in one sitting, I am a big fan of Jen Wang's work.
