As someone who grew up in the 90s with movies like The Craft, of course my friends and I tried seances. This seems perfectly designed for those kids, who are now adults. Alex and his girlfriend, both teenagers, attempt to contact the girlfriend’s deceased brother. The spell seems to fail. Fast forward to Alex as an adult, who attempts the same ritual with catastrophic results. This novella is both heartbreaking and super creepy. I cannot recommend it enough.

"There were only two types of people: bullshitters and straight shooters."

When Alex's uncle unexpectedly passes, Alex thought he had his life together, however throughout the course of These Things Linger we discover that Alex has been a pretty good bullshitter his entire life. With one pull of a knot from his past, his entire future he has "built" crumbles on an already faulty foundation of a broken childhood.

Dan Franklin weaves his words into a terrifying picture of what dabbling into the occult can do. Alex attempts to contact his recently deceased uncle to get some answers or closure for what he thought was an absent parent. However he brings through way more than he wanted and then literally all hell breaks lose.

There were some scenes described so well I have vivid imagery of these terrifying events that took place that will linger long after I have read the book. I was a bit disappointed in the ending but overall it was a great book of horror. And just when I thought the influence of book was done the thought occurs to be right before I turn off the light for bed, to make sure my feet are tucked in so the Gut Snatcher doesn't get me. Indeed these things linger...

I liked this book a lot, but there felt like a lot was left unsaid and unexplained. Which I know is normal in a horror book, but idk it just didn't do it the way I thought. Still creepy though, loved the magic inclusion, and loved the unhappy ending.

When a loved one dies, do you let them go? Here is yet another very good contender in the fight for best indie horror book brawl 2024!

• grief horror
This book has it.

Grief is something that lingers, and it’s different for everyone. I enjoyed the characters, and I felt a certain way with how the story ended because I did relate to Alex in certain aspects. Although the ending may not be for everyone, I did like it. Without giving too much away, I’ll say it shows that not everything can be fixed after decisions are made. This story is truly just a spooky, fun, and sad ride. I enjoyed this from beginning to end, and will be looking into reading more from Dan Franklin!

This is an excellent novel about an occult ritual that goes very wrong. It also features a story of family, love, and grief.

A man loses his uncle, who had raised him and cared for him ever since he was a child. In a moment of grief and reflection he decides to try a ritual to bring his uncle back just so they could have some final words. When he was a teenager, he and his girlfriend at the time performed this ritual trying to bring back her brother.

But this ritual works, perhaps too well, and what follows is absolutely horrifying. His uncle returns, sort of, but he is being tortured and begging to be released. Something is eating him and his pain and suffering is never ending.

Our protagonist has a wife and baby on the way and as this thing tormenting his uncle turns it's eyes on him and his family, nobody will be safe.

The thing that's been released seems to be bound to him by the blood he spilled during this ritual and it can't be stopped. There's no counter ritual or spell to undo what's been done. And when his unborn child begins showing bizarre symptoms, the situation escalates to terrifying levels of horror and dread.

This novel goes to some really dark places and the author doesn't hold back in showing just how evil this thing is. Nobody and nothing is safe, including children and pets, as any attempt to hinder it's progress is met with blood and pain.

This is one of those books that just goes full speed ahead and creates an atmosphere of horrific dread along the way. With great characters, lots of action, blood, and supernatural scares, I highly recommend this book.
