Had the potential to be a modern gothic horror masterpiece in the vein of "The Fall of the House of Usher"--but what the hell was that disappointing ending? Where was any revenge or justice for the characters? There are authors that represent difficult subject matters to be critical of said subject matters, and there are writers who are just writing to get their rocks off... after looking up the rest of the series' plot, I'm inclined to believe Flowers in the Attic falls into the latter category. Still... for the most part this novel was awful and compelling in the aforementioned modern gothic tradition. I'm going to pretend the story wrapped up differently and ended in this one.

Just depressing honestly. It was very descriptive and engaging, it definitely shows its age at times too. It's an interesting exploration of generational trauma and how strict, religious upbringing can lead to more sneaky, defiant children. The twists near the end felt like they were all very piled on, there would be a big secret revealed that greatly changes how you view a chatacter/s and the story, and instead of leaving it there there would be another and then next chapter "oh and also this".
I feel like the ending was left purposefully open ended and vague just to set up a sequel.

Not the incestous bonkbuster I'd been led to believe but a good read. It plodded on then skipped a huge section then wrapped up neatly.

of course everyone always talks about *that* part of this book which is very much meant to make you uncomfortable and succeeds in doing so, but my main thoughts after finishing this is about the rage i felt every time the mother bothered to visit and the heart ache i feel for those poor babies. what a cruel, heart wrenching tale.

had a hard time deciding how to rate this because although it was engaging enough all the incest stuff is just really icky, i cannot believe some people read it as KIDS
