Book #7 Read in 2013
The Cheshire Cheese Cat by Carmen Agra Deedy and Randall Wright (YA)
This is a cute book. As an English major, I enjoy the literary characters and references to the works of Charles Dickens. Skilley is a street cat who ends up being allowed to live in the The Cheshire Cheese inn. As rent, he is supposed to hunt the evergrowing mouse population. But Skilley has a secret--he does not like to eat mice. He would much rather eat cheese. Skilley meets Pip, an intelligent mouse and the two strike up a deal that works well for them both, until an evil street cat, Pinch, is brought in to help decrease the mouse population. Pinch definitely prefers mice to cheese as his diet mainstay.
This book was cute. The animal characters were cute, as were the illustrations throughout the book. The idea of such a unlikely friendship could be used as a lesson to younger readers. I enjoyed this book.

Take a walk into Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese pub in London and you'll encounter a strange menagerie of creatures. Cheese-loving cats, raven-loving mice, and, surprisingly, a strong (yet sometimes tenuous) friendship between a cat and a mouse can all be found within the dated pub.
A great follow-up read for someone who loves 'The Tale of Despereaux' by Kate DiCamillo. I'm definitely not a cat or a mouse person, but there's just something about good ol' Skilley and Pip that warms the heart. The adventures and funny habits of the quirky cast of characters will excite and delight.

I am not one to read animal stories, but this one was cute. I liked the fun twists in the story and appreciated the many Dickens references. I think children will enjoy the characters.

In need of a mouser the Cheese inn takes on a cat. The cat doesn't like mice though. He eats cheese. So he strikes a bargain with the resident mice that he will live in harmony with them for a supply of cheese.
Until his nemesis moves in on his territory and strikes fear in the mice.
Cute little story. That sneaks in Charles Dickens as a author suffering from writer's block and is helped along by our furry friends.

Loved this book! Had great hopes as a Newbery hopeful... too bad. Skilley and Pip are true friends! I love them together. Tom and Jerry of a different nature :0) Great story.

This is a fun little book, from the same genre as [b:The Tale of Despereaux|37190|The Tale of Despereaux|Kate DiCamillo|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1412211823s/37190.jpg|1508178]: talking animals living among humans and having adventures along the way.
It is very predictable but, at the same time, it is quite witty and charming.
I like the fact that the author uses vocabulary that today's children reading this would have to look up and learn.
