I wonder to whom this book is the most applicable:

1. Those seeking acceptance in the face of death.
2. The youth mapping out their future.

The Death of Ivan Ilych creates an interesting narrative exploring greed, social performance, and death.

I imagine I will draw different meaning reading this in my late years. Tolstoy provides an interesting take on my most recent crisis, “What will Price do?” Shall I explore vain comfort? Or, should I try to find a underfunded, possibly fulfilling, philanthropic career? I. Don’t. Know.

Anyways, I give this 3.5 / 5 shots of opium

(Huh, there’s a drug theme recently.)

To re-read

I think the structure of this one being significantly different than Anna Karenina and coming right on the heels of it didn't help my enjoyment. This one is far more reflective from a single point of view than centered around the interactions. In fact, the reflection and lack of interaction is a hallmark because of the utter loneliness that Ivan Ilych feels as he comes to terms with his death.

There were still some of the typical Tolstoy observations that just resounded with me to my core, but felt because of the primarily single POV and lack of various different scenarios that there was just less room for it in this one.
emotional reflective sad

“Death is over.”

the whole thing made sense when after finishing the book i realized that i didnt care that Ivan Ilych died and i didnt even feel that bad about it
i definitely proved the entire point

I KEEP COMING BACK TO EDIT THIS REVIEW

Update a few hours later -
but fr tho before reading this book I thought I was personally pretty chill with death and everything (I’ve struggled with mental health before) but after reading this book I can’t really stop thinking about it and now I’m a little freaked out about dying and everything. I’m starting to think that it’s not so chill anymore :/
