I'm not going to give a star rating because, while I of course agree with everyone that this novel is incredible insightful and moving, the Waking Lion edition is a hot mess, riddled with typos to such an extent that it's pretty clear no one read over the proofs (missing capital letters at the beginnings of some sentences, every single hyphenated word with an extra space in it, etc., etc.) There are zero notes, no intro or afterword, not even a bio note about Tolstoy or the translators. Waking Lion has almost no web presence (this is its skeletal site: http://www.wakinglionpress.com) and seems to publish exclusively out-of-copyright works--I don't think they have much of an editorial staff, or maybe any. Yuck.

That said, I highly recommend this book, but get an edition by another press if you can.
